This worked for me on Mac OS X after some tweaks:

1) here is my docker run command

    docker run -d \
    --name laravel \
    -p 80:80 \
    -e APP=laravel \
    --link db:db \
    -v /Users/username/Sites/laravel:/var/www/laravel \
    -t dmyers/laravel \

2) After entering the running container,

usermod -u 1000 www-data

otherwise laravel can't write to the logs and cache dirs.

3) Changed /etc/apache2/sites-available/000-default.conf to specify the DocumentRoot as /var/www/laravel/public
