Full Description

NICAR Dev Environment

This docker image contains everything you need to setup the dev environment for this year's NICAR conference. It includes:

  • Uses the latest Ubuntu distribution.
  • Python 2.7 and PIP
  • Node.JS and NPM
  • Grunt, Bower
  • Apache HTTP Server
  • PHP 5
  • Ruby, Rails, RBENV
  • MySQL, Postgres, PostGIS, SQLite
  • virtualenv/virtualenvwrapper
  • csvkit
  • git
  • Django
  • Fabric

The NICAR dev environment is quick to get up and and running in a Docker container.

Simply follow these three easy steps:

  1. Download and install the Docker Toolbox.
  2. Run the installed Docker Quickstart Terminal.
  3. Run the following command in the terminal:

     docker run -t -i jerwallace/nicar-dev-env /bin/bash

This command will download the latest nicar-dev-env image to your local machine. It is about 600 MB compressed, 1.7 GB once running. Then, it will run the /bin/bash process as a VM in the open shell.
