quillbuilduser/oracle-18-xe repository overview

To Oracle Legal Team,

The purpose of this container is to support the ongoing development and testing of an open source framework called Quill (https://github.com/getquill/quill) which generates SQL in order to query databases such as Oracle. In order to be able to support compatibility with your database, our users need a way to test Quill against a running Oracle instance. I am aware that DockerHub has the official Oracle 12c image, however due to the issues outlined here (https://github.com/oracle/docker-images/issues/1156), this container is unusable for our purposes.

Now as far as I understand from reading the Oracle 18c XE license agreement here (https://www.oracle.com/technetwork/licenses/db18c-express-license-5137264.html) as well as a blog post from your company blog here (https://blogs.oracle.com/imc/oracle-database-18c-xe-available-for-everyone). Oracle 18c XE binaries are permitted for redistribution so long as it is for development and testing purposes, which this binary image certainly is.

Over the past month, you have issued DMCAs to multiple DockerHub images including an instance of Oracle 11 XE here (https://github.com/wnameless/docker-oracle-xe-11g/issues/118). This particular image was used by a sister Open Source framework called Slick, whose build is broken as a result of the takedown (https://github.com/slick/slick/issues/1993). As a result of this action, I filed a ticket on the Oracle docker-hub page here (https://github.com/oracle/docker-images/issues/1156), desperately asking for an official Oracle image to become available (any version!), which does not require DockerHub credentials. To this day (1/3/2019), one does not exist. If you wish to DMCA this image, please consider the fact that I have no tractable alternative to testing Quill compatibility with Oracle databases. I would greatly appreciate if you could at least wait until an official Oracle 18c XE DockerHub image is released so that I have some way forward.

In general, Open Source developers such as myself work very hard in order to be able to support the Oracle database. This typically involves contorting our build-systems and CI pipelines around your processes. Please give this some consideration.

To Everyone Else:

This container is based on fuzziebrain's great work (https://github.com/fuzziebrain/docker-oracle-xe) with some slight modifications, most notably, that the database configuration is done during image construction time (i.e. during "docker build") as opposed to after the image is first started. The purpose of this image is in order to do CI testing of the Open Source Quill framework (https://github.com/getquill/quill).
