OpenVPN Server Image for Docker

Configuration Options

  1. VOLUME ["/etc/openvpn"] this volume should be read only and contains the configuration options for the VPN server.
  2. VOLUME ["/var/log/openvpn"] the volume to log to, must be read/write.
  3. OpenVPN can operate on TCP and UDP, so EXPOSE 1194/udp and EXPOSE 1194/tcp are used.

Build the image

Use docker build to create the image locally:
docker build -t shing19m/openvpnconf .

Execute the image

To start the image and handle the tun/tap devices, the option --privileged must be used. Expose the port to the public IP depending on your config (either udp or tcp) and give the directory for the configuration as volume:
docker run --privileged --name openvpn_server --hostname openvpn -v /opt/openvpn/server/:/etc/openvpn:ro -v /opt/openvpn/log:/var/log/openvpn -p 1194:1194/udp -d shing19m/openvpnserver

The configuration for the server must be stored in /etc/openvpn/server.conf (see the file
