All images just exist to conveniently provide the binary in your Dockerfile. Just FROM AS one image from this repository and copy the binary from /userdef to your image. For examples, visit the source code.

The images are tiny, because they do not contain any operating system!

⁠You are not downloading any bloat!

You are literally just getting the userdef binary from any of these images.

⁠latest

The freshest image based on Alpine (musl).

⁠*musl | alpine

All images based on Alpine (musl).

⁠*libc | ubuntu

All images based on normal Linux, like for example Ubuntu (libc).

⁠Purpose

You most likely arrived here, because you need to fix the adduser situation on Alpine Linux:

That's why the latest image and all the default images are based on Alpine. If, for whatever reason, you want to use the binary inside an image using a normal Linux distribution, then use one of the libc annotated tags, to ensure compatibility.
