🐳 MediaWiki Docker Image – Prebuilt with Full Extension Bundle

Overview

This Mediawiki image provides a ready-to-use installation with a curated set of extensions pre-installed and configured.
Instead of building and configuring MediaWiki from scratch.

Key Features

  • βœ… Prebuilt MediaWiki with Extensions – ships with the full MediaWiki extension bundle, including our modified MyVisualEditor.
  • βœ… Ready to Run – just pull and run, no need to manually install or configure PHP extensions.
  • βœ… Extensible – you can still mount volumes or add extensions if needed.
  • βœ… Multi-Language Support – Configurable to spin up multiple wiki instances (currently English + French only are available) from one deployment.

Initialization Process

When the container starts, the custom entrypoint script docker-entrypoint.sh runs a one-time initialization process.

Here’s what happens under the hood:

  1. Database Setup

    • Creates wiki databases and user accounts (one per configured language)
    • Imports pre-seeded SQL dumps (init-dump-en.sql, init-dump-fr.sql) More will be added soon πŸ˜‰
  2. Multi-Language Support

    • Reads the LANGUAGES variable from .env
    • Creates one MediaWiki instance per language
  3. Admin & Bot Accounts

    • Default Admin user account will be used for the setup (username: Admin, password: admin#2025), you can simply override it at the end of the setup.
    • Creates a BotPassword account (wikiadviser-bot) with extended permissions for automation
    • Saves all credentials into MW_CREDENTIALS.txt for reuse
  4. Preloading Assets & Templates

    • Imports Common.js and Common.css for each wiki
    • Loads citation templates and modules for Citoid and VisualEditor integration
    • Seeds important MediaWiki configuration pages and modules
  5. One-Time Initialization

    • We use an init volume mount init-data:/data to avoid re-running init setup on restarts, remove all created volumes init-data & mw-data for a fresh restart

Usage

Our MediaWiki solution goes beyond a vanilla setup, it’s designed to run within a Docker Compose stack to ensure proper initialization and database integration, the recommended setup is with docker-compose alongside a MariaDB service.
