⁠Developing rails applications using docker

⁠docker-rails

Docker Rails image for development purposes, based on Alpine Linux. Feel free to modify this file in your real project or use your own set of Dockerfiles. The purpose of this to provide one Dockerfile for Bootstrapping, Development and Production at the start of your project.

⁠Building

⁠Building for Dev

As this image should create files on your machine with the same owner as your dev user, you should build it like this:

docker build . --tag my-rails-dev --build-arg uid=${UID}

If you have no Rails project yet and need rails new at least:

docker build . --tag my-rails-dev-bootstrap --build-arg uid=${UID} --build-arg rails_version=5.1.4

Little bit ugly for now, but we're working on it...

⁠Building for Production

This container can be an example or the base for production container so it is better to use it in FROM directive of your own dockerfile. But anyway building it's descendants in production mode is as simple as:

docker build . --tag my-rails-prod

Mount your volumes with :Z access pattern to avoid SElinux troubles. See https://stackoverflow.com/a/31334443⁠ for more information.

⁠Creating a new rails app

⁠Sqlite3

docker run --rm -v $(pwd):/service:Z my-rails-dev-bootstrap rails new testapp-sqlite3

⁠PostgreSQL

docker run --rm -v $(pwd):/service:Z my-rails-dev-bootstrap rails new testapp-postgresql --database postgresql

⁠MySQL

docker run --rm -v $(pwd):/service:Z my-rails-dev-bootstrap rails new testapp-mysql --database mysql

⁠Working in existing app

Important! If running the container first time you should properly configure bundle location:

docker run --rm -v $(pwd):/service:Z my-rails-dev sh -c "bundle config --local path ./vendor/bundle; bundle config --local bin ./vendor/bundle/bin"

and run bundle install:

docker run --rm -v $(pwd):/service:Z my-rails-dev bundle install

Bundle will install all the gems in vendor/bundle directory inside your Rails project. As dev container will constantly up and go we should preserve installed gems somewhere in your workdir.

Important! Do not forget to add .bundle and vendor/bundle directories to your .gitignore - gems are not needed in your git repo.

In order to get access to the shell:

docker run -it --rm -v $(pwd):/service:Z my-rails-dev /bin/sh

All commands (rails c, rake ...) will be available just right after your obtain the shell.
