askalf/proton-bridge repository overview

AskAlf Proton Bridge

⚠️ Deprecated — no longer maintained

The AskAlf self-hosted distribution was sunset on 2026-08-14. This image is not receiving updates; the last published build is from 2026-07-18.

It stays public and pullable so that anything pinned to an existing tag keeps working, but nothing here tracks the platform any more, and no security patches will be published. Do not start new work against it.

The one-line installer this README used to point at (get.askalf.org) was never deployed and has no DNS record.

Proton Mail IMAP/SMTP bridge for AskAlf, an AI workforce that thinks, heals, remembers, and evolves. This is a custom build of shenxn/protonmail-bridge pinned to bridge v3.19.0 — it stops Proton Bridge's own auto-update from drifting onto a version that pegs the CPU.

Why a custom image?

Proton Bridge auto-updates itself to the v3.24+/v3.25 line. Two problems with letting it:

  1. libfido2 — v3.24.2+ dynamically links libfido2.so.1 (FIDO2/WebAuthn for security-key logins), absent from the slim shenxn/protonmail-bridge Debian base, so an auto-update bricks the launcher with error while loading shared libraries: libfido2.so.1 until the new version dir is manually removed from the persistence volume.
  2. CPU (verified 2026-07-11) — the auto-updated v3.25.0 bridge core spins at ~45–50% CPU continuously; falling back to the bundled v3.19.0 drops it to ~0%.

We first added libfido2-1 to let the bridge update freely (problem 1). After hitting problem 2 we reversed course and pinned to v3.19.0: the bridge launcher runs whatever version binary sits in the persistent updates/ dir, and AutoUpdate:false is not honoured (it still downloads) — so a wrapper entrypoint (disable-autoupdate-entrypoint.sh) wipes the downloaded update on every boot, leaving the launcher to always run the image's bundled v3.19.0. libfido2-1 is retained as harmless belt-and-suspenders.

Features

  • Drop-in shenxn/protonmail-bridge — base tag pinned (not latest) for a small, auditable rebuild surface
  • Auto-update pinned — a boot-time wrapper wipes downloaded updates so the bundled v3.19.0 always runs (no CPU-spinning v3.25, no libfido2 brick)
  • libfido2-1 baked in — belt-and-suspenders for any future pin bump to a v3.24+ base
  • IMAP on port 1143, SMTP on port 1025
  • amd64-only (upstream publishes an amd64-only manifest)

Usage

services:
  proton-bridge:
    image: askalf/proton-bridge:latest
    platform: linux/amd64
    expose:
      - "1143" # IMAP
      - "1025" # SMTP
    volumes:
      - proton-bridge-data:/root

Connect from other containers via proton-bridge:1143 (IMAP) and proton-bridge:1025 (SMTP).
