What is stubby4j?

HTTP/1.1, HTTP/2 and WebSockets server for stubbing external systems in both Docker and non-containerized domains for integration, contract & behavior testing in micro-services architectures (REST, SOAP, WSDL etc.).

Some of the stubby4j key features
* HTTP/1.1 or HTTP/2 request verification and HTTP response stubbing
* Support for TLS protocol versions 1.0, 1.1, 1.2 and 1.3
* Support for HTTP/2 over TCP (h2c) and HTTP/2 over TLS (h2) on TLS v1.2 or newer using ALPN extension
* Support for WebSocket protocol over HTTP/1.1 with TLS or not
* WebSocket request verification, response stubbing, server push, and more
* Stub out external services in a Docker based micro-service architecture
* Avoid negative productivity impact when an API you depend on doesn't exist or isn't complete
* Request proxying - ability to configure a proxy/intercept where requests are proxied to another service
* Simulate edge cases and/or failure modes that the real API won't reliably produce
* Fault injection, where after X good responses on the same URI you get a bad one

... and much more! Please refer to https://stubby4j.com for more information about the features and capabilities.

How to use this image

Environment variables

stubby4j images use environment variables for configuration. Pre v7.2.0 (excl.), the following are the available environment variables:

Available variablesDefault valueDescription
YAML_CONFIGmain.yamlYAML config with stub definitions filename
STUBS_PORT8882Port for stub portal
ADMIN_PORT8889Port for admin portal
STUBS_TLS_PORT7443Port for stub portal over SSL
WITH_ARGSno defaultWITH_ARGS="--<ARG> .. --<ARG>" See available args

Starting a stubby4j instance

Please note that in all stubby4j Docker images, the UID/GID 1001 (user stubby4j & group stubby4j) is set before the ENTRYPOINT instruction to avoid running the service as root.

Basic command

Starting a stubby4j instance is simple using the most basic following command:

$ docker run --rm \
    --env YAML_CONFIG=stubs.yaml \
    --volume <HOST_MACHINE_DIR_WITH_YAML_CONFIG_TO_MAP_VOLUME_TO>:/home/stubby4j/data \
    -p 8882:8882 -p 8889:8889 -p 7443:7443 \
    azagniotov/stubby4j:<TAG>

... where:

  • <HOST_MACHINE_DIR_WITH_YAML_CONFIG_TO_MAP_VOLUME_TO> is the host machine directory with the stubby4j YAML config file (see the YAML_CONFIG env var below) that you want to map to the container volume /home/stubby4j/data
  • Passing stubs.yaml to YAML_CONFIG env var as the name of the main YAML config
  • -p publishes/exposes default container's ports 8882, 8889 & 7443 for stubs, admin & stubs on SSL portals respectively to the host.
  • <TAG> is the tag specifying the stubby4j version you want. See the list above for relevant tags

e.g.:

$ docker run --rm \
    --env YAML_CONFIG=stubs.yaml \
    --volume /Users/zaggy/docker-playground/yaml:/home/stubby4j/data \
    -p 8882:8882 -p 8889:8889 -p 7443:7443 \
    azagniotov/stubby4j:7.5.2-jre8
Full command

The following command example uses all environment variables when starting a stubby4j instance. See available args for more information about all the args that can be used in --env WITH_ARGS="..." variable. Also, do note that the WITH_ARGS value must be enquoted:

docker run --rm \
    --env YAML_CONFIG=stubs.yaml \
    --env STUBS_PORT=9991 \
    --env ADMIN_PORT=8889 \
    --env STUBS_TLS_PORT=8443 \
    --env WITH_ARGS="--enable_tls_with_alpn_and_http_2 --disable_stub_caching --debug --watch" \
    --volume /Users/zaggy/docker-playground/yaml:/home/stubby4j/data \
    -p 9991:9991 -p 8889:8889 -p 8443:8443 \
    azagniotov/stubby4j:7.5.2-jre8

... where the command:

  • Passes stubs.yaml to YAML_CONFIG env var as the name of the main YAML config under /Users/zaggy/docker-playground/yaml
  • Passes 9991 to STUBS_PORT env var as the port for stubs portal
  • Passes 8889 to ADMIN_PORT env var as the port for admin portal
  • Passes 8443 to STUBS_TLS_PORT env var as the port for stubs portal on SSL
  • Passes --enable_tls_with_alpn_and_http_2 (since v7.4.0) to WITH_ARGS env var to enable HTTP/2 over TCP (h2c) and HTTP/2 over TLS (h2) on TLS v1.2 or newer using ALPN extension. If the --enable_tls_with_alpn_and_http_2 is not set, then HTTP/2 is not enabled.
  • Passes --disable_stub_caching to WITH_ARGS env var to disable stubs in-memory caching when stubs successfully matched to the incoming HTTP requests. If the --disable_stub_caching is not set, then the in-memory cache enabled by default.
  • Passes --debug to WITH_ARGS env var to make stubby4j to dump raw incoming HTTP requests to the console. If the --debug is not set, then the dumping incoming HTTP requests is disabled by default.
  • Passes --watch to WITH_ARGS env var to make stubby4j to periodically scan for changes in last modification date of the YAML configs and referenced external files (if any). The watch scans every 100ms. If last modification date changed since the last scan period, the stub configuration is reloaded. If the --watch is not set, then the periodic scan is disabled by default.
  • -p publishes/exposes set container's ports 9991, 8889 & 8443 for stubs, admin & stubs on SSL portals respectively to the host.
  • latest-jre8 is the tag specifying the stubby4j version. See the list above for relevant tags

Running in Docker Compose

You can add stubby4j image to your stack using Docker Compose:

# This compose file adds stubby4j https://hub.docker.com/r/azagniotov/stubby4j to your stack
# See "Environment variables" section at https://hub.docker.com/r/azagniotov/stubby4j
version: '3.8'
services:
  stubby4j:
image: azagniotov/stubby4j:latest-jre8 # you can also use other tags: latest-jre11, latest-jre15
    volumes:
      - "<HOST_MACHINE_DIR_WITH_YAML_CONFIG_TO_MAP_VOLUME_TO>:/home/stubby4j/data"
    container_name: stubby4j
    ports:
      - 8882:8882
      - 8889:8889
      - 7443:7443
    environment:
      YAML_CONFIG: main.yaml
      STUBS_PORT: 8882
      ADMIN_PORT: 8889
      STUBS_TLS_PORT: 7443
      WITH_ARGS: "--enable_tls_with_alpn_and_http_2 --debug --watch"

... where the <HOST_MACHINE_DIR_WITH_YAML_CONFIG_TO_MAP_VOLUME_TO> is the host machine directory with the stubby4j YAML config file (see the YAML_CONFIG env var) that you want to map to the container volume /home/stubby4j/data

See smoke test https://github.com/azagniotov/stubby4j/docker/smoke-test/docker-compose.yml as a working example.

Container application logs

Currently, only in the Docker images tagged as latest-jreXX and 7.3.3-jreXX and higher (i.e.: 7.5.2-jreXX), the stubby4j service emits file-based logs (i.e.: generated by log4j2 library) as well as STDOUT output stream logs. In images tagged as <= 7.3.2-jreXX, only STDOUT output stream logs are available.

The file-based logs persisted in the container volume /home/stubby4j/data under logs directory, i.e.:/home/stubby4j/data/logs

When starting a stubby4j instance using the docker run ... command, e.g.:

$ docker run --rm \
    --env YAML_CONFIG=stubs.yaml \
    --volume <HOST_MACHINE_DIR_WITH_YAML_CONFIG_TO_MAP_VOLUME_TO>:/home/stubby4j/data \
    -p 8882:8882 -p 8889:8889 -p 7443:7443 \
    ...
    ...
    ...

... where the <HOST_MACHINE_DIR_WITH_YAML_CONFIG_TO_MAP_VOLUME_TO> is the host machine directory with the stubby4j YAML config that will be mapped to the aforementioned container volume /home/stubby4j/data. The logs directory will appears under the aforementioned host machine directory, i.e.: <HOST_MACHINE_DIR_WITH_YAML_CONFIG_TO_MAP_VOLUME_TO>/logs

Managing stubs via REST API

Upon running the stubby4j container as per aforementioned examples, the Admin portal runs on localhost:<port> (e.g.: localhost:8889) or wherever you described through stubby4j image environment variables. The admin portal exposes a set of REST APIs that enable management of the loaded in-memory stubs, which were loaded from the YAML config provided to stubby4j during start-up.

See https://stubby4j.com/docs/admin_portal.html for more information
