Quick reference

What is Ballerina?

ballerina logo A programming language and runtime co-designed to be agile and integration simple.

The future apps we write increasingly depend upon programmable endpoints. The discipline of resilient communication between endpoints is integration. It is a domain of hard problems.

Ballerina is a simple programming language whose syntax and runtime address the hard problems of integration. Ballerina is a general purpose, concurrent, transactional, statically and strongly typed programming language with both textual and graphical syntaxes. Its specialization is integration - it brings fundamental concepts, ideas and tools of distributed system integration into the language and offers a type safe, concurrent environment to implement such applications. These include distributed transactions, reliable messaging, stream processing, workflows and container management platforms.

Refer Ballerina Philosophy and Ballerina Documentation for more info.

How to use this image

  • Compile a ballerina program: Following command can be used to compile a ballerina program from Docker.
docker run -v <path to ballerina source directory>:/home/ballerina -it ballerina/ballerina-platform:<tag> ballerina build <.bal(x) file name>

eg:- Following command build the demo.bal file in current directory.

docker run -v `pwd`:/home/ballerina -it ballerina/ballerina-platform:0.970.1 ballerina build demo.bal

The compiled artifacts (demo.balx) will be created in the current working directory.

  • Run a ballerina program: Following command can be used to run a ballerina program in Docker.
docker run -v <path to ballerina source directory>:/home/ballerina -it ballerina/ballerina-platform:<tag> ballerina run <.bal(x) file name>

eg:- Following command runs the demo.bal file in current directory.

docker run -v `pwd`:/home/ballerina -it ballerina/ballerina-platform:0.970.1 ballerina run demo.bal
  • Ballerina Composer: The Ballerina Composer is the integrated development environment (IDE) built from scratch along with the Ballerina platform. It can be used to develop Ballerina programs in source and visual editing modes with additional features like debugging, tracing, and tryIt.
  • Run the following command to start ballerina composer.
 docker run -v `pwd`:/home/ballerina -d -p 9091:9091 ballerina/ballerina-platform:0.970.1 composer --host 0.0.0.0
  • The composer can be accessed with http://127.0.0.1:9091/.
  • This command maps the current working directory of the local machine to container path: /home/ballerina. Therefore, the composer can read/write files in current directory.
