⁠Big Cartel Docker Ruby Images

This repo contains the Dockerfiles to use for building our images for Ruby apps. Each version of Ruby has its own branch for easy maintainability and updating over time.

⁠Publishing a New Image

If you want to create an image for a new version of Ruby, create a new branch, adjust the Dockerfile, and then publish the image.

⁠Tagging

Each release needs a tag for Docker Hub to build. It's also how the various image builds are tracked. The tagging format is as follows:

v#{RUBY_VERSION}-b#{BUILD_NUMBER}

For example, for the 3rd build of the Ruby 2.4.1 image, the tag would be:

v2.4.1-b3

⁠Locally for Testing

To build an image locally for use with a tag, run:

Replace MY_TAG below with the version you want to build, eg v2.4.1-b3

docker build -t bigcartel/ruby-dev:MY_TAG .

You can then reference the image in the compose-dev's docker-compose.yml by using the Image ID output from the image build (also viewable by using docker images).

⁠To Docker Hub

To publish a new version of an image, push up the tag and branch to GitHub. Docker Cloud will automatically build it and publish it to Docker Hub.
