caosfiregroup/fire-machine repository overview

CAOS Fire

This repository aims to deploy an stable, centralised and consistent environment for the fire group at enviromental CAOS/DACSO department in the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) by using Docker tecnology.

This document contains:

  1. How to install the docker image to a host.
  2. How to

Instalation of the docker in host

First you have to download and install the docker client in the host machine. Once it is installed you'll be able to donwload the images from the docker repository.

Each image can create multiple container instances.

The following instructions explains how to create an instance based on the main image:

None persistent example:
docker run --rm -it lpelegrin/caosfire bash

Parameters:

  • --rm: this arguments will delete all the information of the container once you exit from it.
  • -it: open an interactive session of the image.
  • bash: sets which is the program at wich you'll start an interactive session with. So with this argument you'll start a terminal session in the container.
Persistent example:
  • Run a container/instance
docker run --name container-caosfire -it -d lpelegrin/caosfire

Parameters:

  • --name: argument to set the name of the instance: container-caosfire.
  • -it: open an interactive session of the image. This is necesarry because the container doesn't contain an specific program, in fact, it's like a virtual machine so in order to acces to its running process, the interactive session argument must be activated.
  • -d: detached argument. When the interactive argument is selected an entry point of the process must be specified, because we want to run a the container without accessing to it now. The detached argument must be set.

Once this command is running you can check if it's alive with:

  • Check if the container/instance is running
docker ps

CONTAINER ID|IMAGE|COMMAND|CREATED|STATUS|PORTS|NAMES -|-|-|-|-|-| 813cfbb79f2d|/caosfire|"/bin/bash"|1 second ago|Up 1 second||container-caosfire

This means the container with the identification 813cfbb79f2d and the name container-caosfire is up an running. So unless we stop the container it will remain alive with it's persistent container data inside.

To open a session inside the container you have to:

docker exec -it container-caosfire bash

Parameters:

  • container-caosfire in this case you have to select the name of the container or the CONTAINER ID that is shown at the docker ps list.

Once you exit the container you can run once again

docker ps

And the container should keep up.
