ModelFoundry – Docker Compose Quick Start

ModelFoundry is a Django-based platform for managing 3D printing projects, parts, materials, and machines. Deploy ModelFoundry and its dependencies easily using Docker Compose.

🚀 Quick Start

1. Create a docker-compose.yml File
version: '3.8'

services:
  web:
    image: codemonstersoftware/modelfoundry:latest
    ports:
      - "8000:8000"
    environment:
      - DEBUG=1
      - SECRET_KEY=your-secret-key-here
      - DATABASE_URL=postgres://postgres:postgres@db:5432/modelfoundry
      - DJANGO_ALLOWED_HOSTS=*
    depends_on:
      - db
    volumes:
      - static_volume:/app/staticfiles
      - media_volume:/app/media
      - logs_volume:/app/logs

  db:
    image: postgres:15
    environment:
      - POSTGRES_DB=modelfoundry
      - POSTGRES_USER=postgres
      - POSTGRES_PASSWORD=postgres
    ports:
      - "5432:5432"
    volumes:
      - postgres_data:/var/lib/postgresql/data

volumes:
  static_volume:
  media_volume:
  logs_volume:
  postgres_data:

2. Start ModelFoundry
docker-compose up
  • The app will be available at http://localhost:8000.
  • On first startup, migrations and static file collection will run automatically.

3. Create a Superuser (Optional)

To access the Django admin, create a superuser:

docker-compose exec web python manage.py createsuperuser

📦 Data Persistence

  • User uploads, static files, and logs are stored in Docker volumes.
  • Database data is stored in the postgres_data volume.

⚙️ Environment Variables

  • DEBUG – Set to 1 for development, 0 for production.
  • SECRET_KEY – Django secret key (required).
  • DATABASE_URL – Connection string for PostgreSQL.
  • DJANGO_ALLOWED_HOSTS – Allowed hosts for Django (default: *).

⬆️ Upgrading

To upgrade to the latest image:

docker-compose pull
docker-compose down
docker-compose up -d

For more customization, edit the docker-compose.yml as needed.
