The aim is to build a docker image that can allow easy experimentation with Julia and Displaz on local clients.
I.e. this is to be deployed on a developers machine and allow displaz (a graphical interface running on openGL) to execute and be visible in a local window.
getting a container to support a GUI is trivial (at least to do it in a hacky way) and is outlined here for windows and here for Linux.
This is intended to be an open docker image to encourage use of displaz and julia
the latest image can be access from docker pull cognitiveearthdocker/julia-displaz
After cloning this repository build the image by running this command in the project directory (that contains the Dockerfile) include the fullstop at the end of the line.
docker build --tag julia-displaz:latest .
Run the command that allows Xwindows connections from non-local sources
xhost +local:root
This is crude and leaves your system open to security vulnerabilities. So after experimenting close with
xhost -local:root
Install an XServer application
To run the container in the above examples would require the following
if using the locally built image...
docker run --rm -it \
--gpus all \
-e DISPLAY=$DISPLAY \
-e QT_X11_NO_MITSHM=1 \
-v /tmp/.X11-unix:/tmp/.X11-unix \
--name=julia-displaz \
julia-displaz:latest
if using the docker repository image...
docker run --rm -it \
--gpus all \
-e DISPLAY=$DISPLAY \
-e QT_X11_NO_MITSHM=1 \
-v /tmp/.X11-unix:/tmp/.X11-unix \
--name=julia-displaz \
cognitiveearthdocker/julia-displaz:latest
This should then give a command prompt inside the container that can be used to execute Julia or Displaz.
To execute Displaz, simply type displaz
