Purpose

The Cohesity Datamover in Kubernetes backups serves as the functional equivalent of a Cohesity agent deployed on sources servers; in the Kubernetes context, it's implemented as a pod within the cluster. This Datamover pod acts as the component responsible for moving backup and restore data between the Cohesity platform and the Kubernetes cluster.

During backup operations, the Datamover coordinates with Velero (the open-source backup solution integrated into Cohesity’s Kubernetes protection strategy). Velero is responsible for taking snapshots of the Kubernetes namespaces and capturing resource and metadata states. Once Velero has captured these backups, they are presented to the Datamover, which then efficiently manages the transfer of these backups to the Cohesity platform for storage and future recovery operations.

Additionally, the Datamover is deployed as a DaemonSet in the Cohesity-specific Kubernetes namespace, ensuring high availability and scalability by running on master nodes and other designated nodes as required.

In summary, the Cohesity Datamover acts as a bridge between Velero's backup capabilities and Cohesity's storage and recovery infrastructure, making robust, consistent Kubernetes data protection possible
