1.0 Setting up the environment

All the required dependencies are listed as below and are required to get it running:

The docker method is the easier and more maintainable variant of the dedicated server therefor i highly recommend using it.

Docker install method dependencies:
- nano / vim or comperable
- docker
- docker-compose
- ufw

2.0 Docker install method

Choose a directory for your install and make sure it is owned by a user with the UID 1000 to ensure that the docker container will not run into permission issues while creating all the necessary files.

When started on first installation the container will ask for a server administrator password that is why the container has to be started in terminal interactive mode ("-ti").

The container will create the following folder structure that is required to get the server to run correctly:

~/YOUR_CREATED_FOLDER
 - /server # includes the project zomboid dedicated binary
 - /serverfiles # holds the saves, db, backups and server config

You need to have docker and docker-compose for this install method to work.

Docker run
PortsTypeVolumes
16261udp./server:/opt/pzserver
16262udp./serverfiles:/home/pzuser/Zomboid
docker run -ti --name SERVER_NAME --rm -p 16261:16261/udp -p 16262:16262/udp -v ./server:/opt/pzserver -v ./serverfiles:/home/pzuser/Zomboid corespace/project-zomboid:v1.0.2-b41.78.16

After the first install is completed you should stop and recreate the container by running the command again but this time add -tid instead of -ti so that the container is starting in the background. Don't forget to remove the --rm parameter as well.

Docker compose
services:
  gameserver-project-zomboid:
    image: corespace/project-zomboid:v1.0.2-b41.78.16
    container_name: gameserver-pzserver
    volumes:
      - ./server:/opt/pzserver/
      - ./serverfiles:/home/pzuser/Zomboid
    ports:
      - 16261:16261/udp
      - 16262:16262/udp
    tty: true
    stdin_open: true
