The Jenkins docker container runs alongside this container and the **volumes-from** connection is used to access the jenkins user database at **'/var/jenkins_home/users'**.\n\n---\n\n## docker build\n\nTo push the image to dockerhub you'll need to do a **`docker login`** before and a **`docker logout`** after.\n\n```\ndocker rmi devops4me/s3jusers\ndocker build --rm --no-cache --tag devops4me/s3jusers:latest .\ndocker tag devops4me/s3jusers:latest devops4me/s3jusers:latest\ndocker push devops4me/s3jusers:latest\n```\n\n---\n\n## docker run\n\nNote that the Jenkins docker container can be running (or has ran) for the **volumes from** specifier to point to the docker managed volume stored on the host within the **`/var/lib/docker/volumes/_data/<>`** directory.\n\n\n```\ndocker run \\\n --tty \\\n --detach \\\n --volumes-from vm.jenkins \\\n --name vm.s3jusers \\\n --env JENKINS_USERS_BUCKET= \\\n devops4me/s3jusers:latest\n```\n\nThe environment variable called **`JENKINS_USERS_BUCKET`** must be set to the S3 bucket name.\n\n### Running Locally\n\nIf and when testing out this container locally you will need to provide AWS credentials to the environment. Your laptop unlike an EC2 instance, does not have an instance role profile allowing it to access the S3 bucket.\n\n```\naws sts assume-role --role-arn <> --role-session-name test-s3jusers --profile <> --duration-seconds 3600\ndocker run \\\n --tty \\\n --detach \\\n --volumes-from vm.jenkins \\\n --name vm.s3jusers \\\n --env JENKINS_USERS_BUCKET=bucket.name \\\n --env AWS_ACCESS_KEY_ID=access.key \\\n --env AWS_SECRET_ACCESS_KEY=secret.key \\\n --env AWS_DEFAULT_REGION=region.key \\\n devops4me/s3jusers:latest\n```\n\nAlso, if not running the docker container on an ec2 instance with a role profile for accessing S3, you'll need to pass in the AWS_ACCESS_KEY_ID, AWS_SECRET_ACCESS_KEY and AWS_DEFAULT_REGION environment variables.\n\n---\n\n## copy (pull) jenkins users from S3\n\nIf upon examination the location **'/var/jenkins_home/users'** is empty, the script copies the user database files from the S3 bucket whose name is configured in the environment variables.\n\n```\naws s3 cp --recursive s3://${JENKINS_USERS_BUCKET} /var/jenkins_home/users\n```\n\n---\n\n\n## sync (push) jenkins users to S3\n\nUse commands like the below. The first syncs from a jenkins folder to an S3 bucket. The second syncs from the current folder and the third does the same, but it also uses a local AWS role profile.\n\n```\naws s3 sync /var/jenkins_home/users/ s3://${JENKINS_USERS_BUCKET} --delete --size-only\naws s3 sync . s3:// --delete --size-only\naws s3 sync . s3:// --delete --size-only --profile=\n```\n\n","has_starred","hub_user","immutable_tags_settings",{"_75":11,"_76":77},"enabled","rules",[78],".*","is_automated","permissions",{"_82":21,"_83":11,"_84":11},"read","write","admin","user","storage_size",255130933,"orgData","recentTags",[91],{"_92":44,"_93":94,"_95":96,"_97":98,"_99":100,"_50":118,"_119":94,"_120":33,"_121":56,"_57":122,"_123":124,"_125":109,"_126":118,"_127":66,"_128":21},"content_type","creator",4365516,"full_size",255122653,"id",65038577,"images",[101],{"_102":103,"_104":105,"_106":107,"_108":109,"_110":111,"_112":113,"_114":107,"_115":-5,"_116":96,"_63":66,"_117":-5},"architecture","amd64","digest","sha256:45de8b1a14fb1e4b963bca145701944ee6d61fd6c84f0800cd4d1edfda44c084","features","","last_pulled","2026-10-08T22:29:14.744068382Z","last_pushed","2019-08-12T14:41:26Z","os","linux","os_features","os_version","size","variant","2019-08-12T14:41:25.710724Z","last_updater","last_updater_username","media_type","latest","repository",7540095,"tag_last_pulled","tag_last_pushed","tag_status","v2","sbxKitMetadata","isPotentialSpam","isHubSbxKitsEnabled","showSbxLogoOverride","sbxTrademarkText","displaySecurityMetadata","tagAttestations","tagsHaveAttestations",[],"selectedTag","attestationsUrl","routes/_layout.r.$namespace.$reponame.tags",{"_38":142,"_149":150,"_136":159,"_160":11},{"_40":143,"_42":144,"_45":46,"_47":48,"_49":11,"_50":51,"_52":53,"_54":145,"_57":35,"_32":33,"_58":59,"_60":44,"_61":62,"_63":64,"_65":66,"_67":-5,"_68":62,"_69":70,"_71":11,"_72":33,"_73":146,"_79":11,"_80":148,"_85":33,"_86":87},[],[44],[56],{"_75":11,"_76":147},[78],{"_82":21,"_83":11,"_84":11},"tags",{"_151":64,"_152":-5,"_153":-5,"_154":155},"count","next","previous","results",[156],{"_92":44,"_93":94,"_95":96,"_97":98,"_99":157,"_50":118,"_119":94,"_120":33,"_121":56,"_57":122,"_123":124,"_125":109,"_126":118,"_127":66,"_128":21},[158],{"_102":103,"_104":105,"_106":107,"_108":109,"_110":111,"_112":113,"_114":107,"_115":-5,"_116":96,"_63":66,"_117":-5},[],"canDeleteTags","actionData","errors"]
