The default Kong docker image supports only basic clustering across ECS container instances. Basically allowing only one container per host, using host networking mode. It does not support proper clustering across ECS nodes due to IP address resolution and dynamic port mapping issues.
This Docker file uses the 0.10.2 (latest at time writing) Dockerfike from mashape/kong as a base, and then performs some lookups against the host and AWS EC2 metadata service to figure out what ports are in use, before staring the kong service.
Kong 0.11 is now fully stateless and doesn't make use of serf, meaning clustering is much improved. As such, we no longer need this self-rolled image, and the default kong:0.11(-alpine) works perfectly with ECS. The old image is still here in case we have a need for it, but will likely be removed from the respository in due course.
This image contains PHP7 with FPM and an Nginx webserver, with both processes managed by runit, allowing running of PHP applications over HTTP.
Note that this image is intentionally minimal, and you will more than likely need to extend via your own Dockerfile (rather than simply including it in your docker-compose.yml) in order to add other PHP extensions (e.g. Redis, PDO, etc).
