Explanation:

  1. User Adds Movies to List / RSS Feed:

    • User (You): You add movies you want to watch to a list. This can be done manually in Radarr or automatically via an RSS/Feed Source like Trakt lists or IMDb watchlists.
    • List / RSS Feed Source: Acts as a collection of movies that Radarr should monitor. Examples include:
      • Custom lists you create.
      • Public lists from movie databases (e.g., IMDb, Trakt).
      • RSS feeds from release groups or forums.
  2. Radarr Monitors the List / RSS Feed:

    • Radarr: Regularly checks the List / RSS Feed Source for new entries.
    • When a new movie is added to the list, Radarr adds it to its database and begins searching for available downloads.
  3. Searching for Movies via Indexer:

    • Radarr → Indexer:
      • Radarr sends search queries to the configured Indexer(s) to find the desired movies.
      • Indexers are services that catalog available content on Usenet or torrent sites.
  4. Radarr Sends Download Request to Download Client:

    • Radarr → Download Client:
      • Upon finding a match, Radarr sends a download request (NZB or torrent file) to the Download Client.
      • The download client begins downloading the movie from the internet.
  5. Download Client Retrieves Movies:

    • Download Client:
      • Handles the actual downloading process.
      • Examples include:
        • Torrent Clients: qBittorrent, Transmission.
        • Usenet Clients: NZBGet, SABnzbd.
  6. Radarr Imports and Manages Movies in Local Library:

    • Radarr ← Download Client:
      • Radarr monitors the download client's progress.
      • Once the download is complete, the Download Client notifies Radarr.
    • Radarr → Local Library:
      • Radarr moves the downloaded movie to your Local Library.
      • It renames and organizes the movie according to your specified format.
      • Updates metadata (covers, descriptions, subtitles) by fetching information from databases like The Movie Database (TMDb).
  7. Local Library Stores Organized Movies:

    • Local Library:
      • The centralized storage location for all your movies.
      • Can be on a local hard drive, external drive, or network-attached storage (NAS).

Workflow Summary:

  • Step 1: User Input

    • You add movies to a list (from imdb) or subscribe to an RSS feed of wanted movies.
  • Step 2: List / RSS Feed Source (or IMDB list)

    • Serves as a dynamic collection of movies for Radarr to monitor.
  • Step 3: Radarr Monitoring

    • Radarr checks the list/feed and updates its wanted list accordingly.
  • Step 4: Search and Download Initiation

    • Radarr searches indexers for available copies of the movies.
    • Sends download tasks to the download client when matches are found.
  • Step 5: Download Process

    • The download client downloads the movies from Usenet servers or torrent peers.
  • Step 6: Importing and Organizing

    • Radarr imports completed downloads.
    • Renames files, updates metadata, and moves them to the local library.
  • Step 7: Library Management

    • Your local library now contains the newly added movies, organized and ready to watch.

Key Components Detailed:

  • User:

    • Interacts with Radarr via its web interface.
    • Adds movies manually or sets up connections to lists or RSS feeds.
  • List / RSS Feed Source:

    • Manual Lists: Created within Radarr or imported from services like Trakt or IMDb.
    • RSS Feeds: Automated feeds that update with new movie releases or recommendations.
  • Radarr:

    • Central automation tool managing the entire process.
    • Configured with indexers, download clients, and lists/feeds.
  • Indexer:

    • Provides search capabilities for Radarr to find movies.
    • Can be public indexers or private ones requiring membership.
  • Download Client:

    • Software handling downloads.
    • Must be properly configured to communicate with Radarr.
  • Local Library:

    • Destination where movies are stored.
    • Should have sufficient space and be accessible to Radarr for file operations.

Additional Notes:

  • Automation with Lists and Feeds:

    • Using lists and RSS feeds allows for a high degree of automation.
    • Movies can be automatically added based on criteria like upcoming releases, popular movies, or personal ratings.
  • Custom Scripts and Notifications:

    • Radarr supports custom scripts and notifications to inform you when new movies are added or when actions are required.
  • Quality Profiles and Filters:

    • Radarr lets you define quality profiles to ensure movies meet your desired resolution and format before downloading.
  • Scheduled Tasks:

    • Radarr runs scheduled tasks to update lists, search for movies, and clean up old data.

Example Scenario:

  1. Adding a Movie via Trakt List:

    • You add a movie to your Trakt watchlist.
    • Radarr, linked to your Trakt account, detects the new movie in the list.
  2. Automated Searching:

    • Radarr searches the indexer for the movie.
    • Finds a matching release that meets your quality criteria.
  3. Downloading and Organizing:

    • Radarr sends the download request to qBittorrent.
    • Once downloaded, Radarr moves the file to your "Movies" folder, renames it, and fetches metadata.
  4. Enjoy Your Movie:

    • The movie is now available in your local library, neatly organized and ready to watch.
