This docker image is for adding backuping directories directly to the docker-compose service instead of one centralized backup service which would have been touched for every service is started on the host.
You can also use the image outside a docker-compose file.
This image is based on rsnapshot
rsnapshot is a filesystem snapshot utility based on rsync. rsnapshot makes it easy to make periodic snapshots of local machines, and remote machines over ssh. The code makes extensive use of hard links whenever possible, to greatly reduce the disk space required.
There are two volumes which have to be mounted:
/source - the files you want to backup
/backup - the location where the backup should be stored. Most likely an external drive
For easy configuration, there is for each timespan a dedicated configuration possibility. Each timespan is splitted in retain (=backups to keep) and a cron-expression in what intervals the specific timespan should be executed for disabling a specific timespan set the RETAIN_ variable to 0
Defaultvalues are:
RETAIN_MINUTELY=0
CRON_MINUTELY="* * * * *"
RETAIN_HOURLY=0
CRON_HOURLY="05 * * * *"
RETAIN_DAILY=14
CRON_DAILY="15 1 * * *"
RETAIN_WEEKLY=5
CRON_WEEKLY="25 1 * * 0"
RETAIN_MONTHLY=12
CRON_MONTHLY="35 1 1 * *"
docker run -d -e RETAIN_MINUTELY=10 -v $PWD/usb_stick:/backup -v /home/fancy_user:/source floibach/rsnapshot-backup
