foamscience/foam-extend-4 repository overview

This is a patched version of Foam-Extend 4.0 built specifically for Learning Purposes (To be used in the Reservoir Engineering with OpenFOAM course). It's not suitable for production use.

Overview

The focus is on:

  • Compiling only Reservoir Engineering specific libraries (so, no turbulence models for example) but these can be built in the container
  • Adapting Foam-Extend-4.0 installation to be compiled on IBM Z systems running Debian Stretch (which was not that hard).
  • The hole library is built in Debug Mode (Note: Most users and programmers wouldn't need this because you're expected to debug just your own code! but it's useful for matrix debugging and installing gdb helper functions), so expect compilation to be "slow" and the image to be lengthy.

But as Foam-Extend 4.0 is an open source sofwtare package, we include the full source code so you can do things like:

  • Compile all included libraries for production use (not in debug mode)

The Dockerfile used to build this image was also included /root/foam/foam-extend-4/Dockerfile

Note: The image is built to expose port 8888/tcp by default

Usage

One would instantiate a named container based on this image (forwarding the containers 8888 port to the hosts 8888 port) :

$ docker run -it -name fe4 -p 8888:8888 foamscience/foam-extend-4:s390x
$ docker start -i fe4

For a temporary container (for experiments, perishes as soon as you log out of it)

$ docker run -it --rm -p 8888:8888 foamscience/foam-extend-4:modified
