I had to force /etc/resolv.conf to use specific servers on my system. My WAN IP is dynamic and I use OpenDNS for web filter. For some reason, I was not able to have both web filter and ad blocking at the same time... least not on a constant basis.
Created resolv.conf with OpenDNS servers on Docker host
then mounted it as a RO volume.
/var/lib/docker/volumes/pi-hole/resolv.conf:/etc/resolv.conf
Now pi-hole can query OpenDNS directly instead of using the loopback address configured. I dont know the difference but it works for now.
