The history of the first car began back in 1768 with the creation of steam-powered machines capable of transporting a person. In 1806, the first cars appeared, driven by internal combustion engines. combustible gas, which led to the appearance in 1885 of the commonly used gasoline or gasoline internal combustion engine today. Cars powered by electricity briefly appeared at the beginning of the 20th century, but almost completely disappeared from sight until the beginning of the 21st century, when interest in low-toxic and environmentally friendly transport arose again. Essentially, the early history of the automobile can be divided into stages, distinguished by the predominant mode of self-propelled movement. The later stages were determined by trends in size and style of appearance, as well as preferences in the intended use. And also in 1840 bicycles were invented.

The first prototype of the car was built as a toy for the Chinese emperor by a member of the Jesuit community in China, Ferdinand Verbiest in 1672.

In Russia, the prototype of the first car was created by the serf of the Vyatka province of the Yaransky district Leonty Shamshurenkov. He presented his invention in St. Petersburg on November 1, 1752. It was a four-wheeled self-running stroller with a pedal drive, developing a speed of up to 15 km / h. He also developed the first verstometer (an automobile meter that measures the distance traveled). Later, in the 1780s, the Russian designer, inventor and engineer Ivan Kulibin began work on a carriage with pedals. In 1791, he created a three-wheeled self-propelled carriage, reaching speeds of up to 16.2 km / h. In this "scooter" he drove through the streets of St. Petersburg. His three-wheel mechanism contained almost all the main components of the future car: gearbox, flywheel, rolling bearings. Unfortunately, as with many of his other inventions, the state did not see the potential of these developments, and they did not receive further development. Shortly before his death, the inventor began work on combining a steam engine with his "scooter", but never finished the work. What stage the process was at remains unknown.

German engineer Karl Benz, the inventor of many automotive technologies, is considered the inventor of the modern automobile. The four-stroke gasoline (gasoline) internal combustion engine, which is the most common form of modern self-propelled propulsion, is the development of the German inventor Nikolaus Otto. A similar four-stroke diesel engine was also invented by the German Rudolf Diesel. The hydrogen fuel cell, one of the technologies hailed as a replacement for gasoline as a power source for cars, was discovered in principle by another German, Schönbein Christian Friedrich, in 1838. The car on an electric battery owes its appearance to one of the inventors of the electric motor, the Hungarian Anjos Jedlik, and Gaston Planté, who invented the lead-acid battery in 1858.

Early cars Ferdinand Verbiest, a member of the Jesuit community in China, built the first steam-powered car around 1672 as a toy for the Chinese emperor. The car was small and could not carry a driver or passenger, but it may have been the first working steam transport ("car")

It is believed that self-propelled steam powered vehicles were developed at the end of the 18th century. In 1770 and 1771, Nicolas-Joseph Cugno demonstrated his experimental steam-powered artillery tractor fardier à vapeur (steam cart). Cuyunho's design proved to be impractical and did not develop in his native France, the center of innovation moves to the UK. By 1784, William Murdoch had built a working model of a steam carriage in Redruth, and in 1801, Richard Trevithick was driving a full-size car on the roads of Camborne. Such cars were in vogue for a while and over the next decades, innovations such as hand brakes, multi-speed transmissions and improved steering were developed. Some were commercially successful in providing public transportation, until public resistance against these overly fast cars led to the enactment of the English Law in 1865. Locomotive Act ”, which requires a person to walk in front of self-propelled vehicles on public roads in Great Britain, waving a red flag and blowing a horn. This decisively suppressed the development of road transport for almost the entire remainder of the 19th century. As a result, the efforts of engineers and inventors were thrown into railway locomotives. The law was not revoked until 1896, although the need for a red flag was eliminated in 1878.
