See Slack integration.\n\n## 1) Docker Cloud Setup\n- Create 2 node clusters on Docker Cloud, one with the deploy tag of `apps` and one with the deploy tag of `nginx`.\n

\n

As the names imply, you will give all of your apps, services, databases, etc an `apps` deploy tag, while only `willrstern/docker-cloud-nginx` containers get the `nginx` tag. This way, nginx will always be on the exact same IP addresses, so DNS can be assigned to those IP addresses.\n\n- Send all of your DNS entries & subdomains to the `nginx` node IP addresses.\n(NOTE: [DynDNS (dyn.com)](http://dyn.com) supports active failover for IP addresses in case a node goes down, this is a great solution for DNS)\n\n## 2) Running the Load Balancer\nRun one or more copies of `willrstern/docker-cloud-nginx` on Docker Cloud.\n- add the `nginx` deploy tag & choose the `every node` strategy.
\n- Choose the autorestart `always` option as well.
![](https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1532/25069136655_10f9bc9719_z.jpg)\n- __MAKE SURE__ to choose the `Full Access` API role on the Environment Variables page or the load balancer won't be able to detect running services via the Docker Cloud API.\n- Set `NGINX_LB_NAME=prod` env variable.\n- Set `CONTAINER_LIMIT` env variable if running more than 25 containers.\n
![](https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1716/25042790246_3c514d97d4_z.jpg)\n\n\nThe Nginx service will now listen to Docker Cloud's stream API. As services change, this LB will balance services with the `NGINX_LB=prod` env var. A new Nginx configuration is generated & tested with `nginx -t`. If Nginx accepts the new configuration, it will reload nginx.\n\n\n## 3) Load Balancing a Service\nSimply run your services on Docker Cloud with the `NGINX_PORT`, `NGINX_VIRTUAL_HOST` and `NGINX_LB` environment variables set in your `Dockerfile`:\n```\nENV NGINX_LB prod\nENV NGINX_VIRTUAL_HOST test.com,othersite.com\nENV NGINX_PORT 3000\n```\n\nWhen your service starts, `willrstern/docker-cloud-nginx` will notice each container and immediately reload it's config!\n\n__NOTE__: Apps don't need to expose ports to be load balanced! Docker Cloud gives each container an IP, so don't add `EXPOSE` to your Dockerfile.\n\n## 4) SSL Termination\n- create a cert\n- concatenate the `.key` and `.crt` files\n- replace newlines with `\\\\n` and copy the output\n```\nopenssl req -x509 -newkey rsa:2048 -keyout mysite.key -out mysite.crt -days 1080 -nodes -subj '/CN=*/O=My Company Name LTD./C=US'\ncat mysite.key mysite.crt > mysite.combined.crt\nawk 1 ORS='\\\\\\\\n' mysite.combined.crt\n```\n- add the combined key & cert into `NGINX_CERTS` env var to your `Dockerfile`\n```\nENV NGINX_CERTS -----BEGIN RSA PRIVATE KEY-----\\\\nMIIEogIBAAKCAQEA...and so on\n```\n\nIf you have multiple `NGINX_VIRTUAL_HOST`s, add a cert for each host with `,` in-between: i.e.\n```\nENV NGINX_VIRTUAL_HOST mysite.com,othersite.com\nENV NGINX_CERTS ,\n```\nor\n```\nENV NGINX_VIRTUAL_HOST mysite.com,othersite.com\n# only do SSL on othersite.com\nENV NGINX_CERTS ,\n```\n\n## 5) Slack Integration\n- Before reloading a config, it runs `nginx -t` to make sure it is valid\n- If a config fails, it will continue using the last-good-config until a working config is generated\n- Add `SLACK_WEBHOOK=https://hooks.slack.com/services/T02RK...` env var to get notifications when a config fails.\n\n\n## Local Development Workflow\n- Set the `DOCKERCLOUD_AUTH` & `NGINX_LB_NAME` environment variables and run `npm start`:\n```\n$ DOCKERCLOUD_AUTH=\"Basic ....\" NGINX_LB_NAME=prod npm start\n```\nIt will now watch your Docker Cloud cluster for events and generate a config to `./default.conf`\n - __How do I get the `DOCKERCLOUD_AUTH` variable?__\n - Run any service on Docker Cloud with the `Full Access` API role on the environment variables page.\n - Now inspect the running service's `Environment Variables` tab to see the `DOCKERCLOUD_AUTH` value.\n","has_starred","hub_user","immutable_tags_settings",{"_74":11,"_75":76},"enabled","rules",[77],".*","is_automated","permissions",{"_81":21,"_82":11,"_83":11},"read","write","admin","user","storage_size",285254667,"orgData","recentTags",[90],{"_91":44,"_92":93,"_94":95,"_96":97,"_98":99,"_49":118,"_119":93,"_120":33,"_121":55,"_56":122,"_123":124,"_125":108,"_126":118,"_127":65,"_128":21},"content_type","creator",164114,"full_size",142846643,"id",4123790,"images",[100],{"_101":102,"_103":104,"_105":106,"_107":108,"_109":110,"_111":112,"_113":106,"_114":-5,"_115":116,"_62":65,"_117":-5},"architecture","amd64","digest","sha256:b4322535cc04b72af62c99484123c80bb03d2f81484f13d1662e8085ecfa9e53","features","","last_pulled","2026-10-02T07:20:40.178122474Z","last_pushed","2016-08-02T23:28:38Z","os","linux","os_features","os_version","size",142846611,"variant","2016-08-02T23:28:37.503619Z","last_updater","last_updater_username","media_type","latest","repository",834242,"tag_last_pulled","tag_last_pushed","tag_status","v2","sbxKitMetadata","isPotentialSpam","isHubSbxKitsEnabled","showSbxLogoOverride","sbxTrademarkText","displaySecurityMetadata","tagAttestations","tagsHaveAttestations",[],"selectedTag","attestationsUrl","routes/_layout.r.$namespace.$reponame.tags",{"_38":142,"_149":150,"_136":159,"_160":11},{"_40":143,"_42":144,"_45":46,"_47":35,"_48":11,"_49":50,"_51":52,"_53":145,"_56":35,"_32":33,"_57":58,"_59":-5,"_60":61,"_62":63,"_64":65,"_66":-5,"_67":61,"_68":69,"_70":11,"_71":33,"_72":146,"_78":21,"_79":148,"_84":33,"_85":86},[],[44],[55],{"_74":11,"_75":147},[77],{"_81":21,"_82":11,"_83":11},"tags",{"_151":63,"_152":-5,"_153":-5,"_154":155},"count","next","previous","results",[156],{"_91":44,"_92":93,"_94":95,"_96":97,"_98":157,"_49":118,"_119":93,"_120":33,"_121":55,"_56":122,"_123":124,"_125":108,"_126":118,"_127":65,"_128":21},[158],{"_101":102,"_103":104,"_105":106,"_107":108,"_109":110,"_111":112,"_113":106,"_114":-5,"_115":116,"_62":65,"_117":-5},[],"canDeleteTags","actionData","errors"]
