It mounts an application directory at the root. /application/ which using the volume command you can make it run a python library, closing when completed. It uses the pwd to use the current directory and mounts it as /application/ in the docker image. You can the simply run your python application for example the below will start server.py.

docker run -it -v `pwd`:/application python1 python3 /application/server.py

This command allows you run in the shell so you can access the python.

docker run -it -v `pwd`:/application jasoftware/python /bin/bash
