⁠RStudio Server Container

This repo provides a way to start an instance of RStudio Server, with many packages. It is based off the rocker/verse image, with packages added to facilitate quick deployment without the need to manually install packages.

⁠Starting the Container

Simply run:

docker run -d -p 8787:8787 -e USER={USER} -e PASSWORD={PASSWORD} -v {SOME_DIR_ON_HOST}:/home/{USER} --name rstudio-server jiewpeng:rstudio-server

After this, remember to unset the PASSWORD environment variable by going into the container:

docker exec -it rstudio-server /bin/bash

(in container):

unset PASSWORD

⁠Multiple Users

In order to share the files between users, they need to share the same user group. Start the container using this instead:

docker run -d -p 8787:8787 -e USER={USER} -e GROUPID=1000 -e UMASK=022 -e PASSWORD={PASSWORD} -v {SOME_DIR_ON_HOST}:/mnt/rstudio-projects --name rstudio-server jiewpeng:rstudio-server

(in container):

ln -s /mnt/rstudio-projects /home/{USER}

Also remember to unset the password as above so as not to leave the password in an environment variable.

Create a user using (in container):

adduser {USER} --gid 1000
ln -s /mnt/rstudio-projects /home/{USER}
