kzwo/bitcoin-ii repository overview

BitcoinII Full Node in Docker (kzwo/bitcoin-ii)

This runs a BitcoinII full node (bitcoinIId) in Docker with safe defaults.

What you get

  • Full node running in the background
  • Data stored persistently in a Docker volume (/data)
  • P2P port open for peers
  • RPC kept localhost-only (safer)

Ports

  • 8338/tcp = P2P (public peers)
  • 8337/tcp = RPC (localhost only)
  • 8339/tcp = local service (localhost only)

1) Pull the image

docker pull kzwo/bitcoin-ii:latest

(Optional) confirm the image exists locally:

docker images | grep kzwo/bitcoin-ii

2) Start the node

This starts the node in the background and stores blockchain data in a persistent volume.

docker run -d \
  --restart unless-stopped \
  --name bitcoinii \
  -v bc2-data:/data \
  -p 8338:8338 \
  -p 127.0.0.1:8337:8337 \
  -p 127.0.0.1:8339:8339 \
  kzwo/bitcoin-ii:latest
What the flags mean
  • -d runs in background
  • --restart unless-stopped auto-starts after reboot
  • --name bitcoinii gives the container a friendly name
  • -v bc2-data:/data keeps your node data safe between updates
  • -p 8338:8338 exposes P2P to your network
  • -p 127.0.0.1:8337:8337 keeps RPC only on your machine (not public)
  • -p 127.0.0.1:8339:8339 keeps the local service only on your machine

3) Watch logs (first start)

docker logs -f bitcoinii

Stop following logs anytime with: Ctrl + C (The node keeps running.)

4) Sanity checks (confirm it works)

4.1 Check container is running
docker ps | grep bitcoinii
4.2 Check node responds to RPC
docker exec -it bitcoinii bitcoinII-cli -datadir=/data getblockchaininfo

You should get JSON output (chain info, blocks, headers, etc.).

4.3 Check network info (optional)
docker exec -it bitcoinii bitcoinII-cli -datadir=/data getnetworkinfo
4.4 Check ports mapped on the host (optional)
docker port bitcoinii

5) Stop the node safely

docker stop bitcoinii

This shuts down bitcoinIId cleanly.

Confirm it stopped:

docker ps | grep bitcoinii

(should show nothing)

6) Start it again

docker start bitcoinii

Follow logs again if you want:

docker logs -f bitcoinii

7) Update to the newest image (simple upgrade)

  1. Stop the container:
docker stop bitcoinii
  1. Pull the newest image:
docker pull kzwo/bitcoin-ii:latest
  1. Remove the old container (your data stays safe in the volume):
docker rm bitcoinii
  1. Re-run the same docker run -d ... command from step 2.

8) Uninstall (optional)

Remove the container
docker stop bitcoinii
docker rm bitcoinii
Remove the image
docker rmi kzwo/bitcoin-ii:latest
Remove the data volume (WARNING: deletes blockchain + wallet data)
docker volume rm bc2-data

Security notes (important)

  • Do NOT expose RPC port 8337 to the internet.
  • If you want remote access, do it through a VPN/Tailscale/Tor/reverse proxy with authentication.
