The latest version of Elasticsearch includes some required checks⁠ during startup when you are running in a production environment. It assumes that if the process is bound to 0.0.0.0 then you are running in production. The caveat to this, of course, is if you are running inside of Docker which needs to be bound to 0.0.0.0. Without making some changes to the underlying host, it is not possible to get the default Docker image working. It is not always possible for users to make these changes. This image is provided for convenience for use inside of environments where it is not possible to change the underlying host settings. This image is created by disabling the startup checks⁠ which bypass this requirement regardless of which network interface elasticsearch is bound to. With this in mind, this image is not suitable for production use.

To recreate this image, you can apply the same changes, build a .deb with gradle assemble and then create the docker image with the Dockerfile shown below:

FROM elasticsearch:5.1.1

ADD distribution/deb/build/distributions/elasticsearch-5.1.1-ci.deb .
RUN dpkg -i elasticsearch-5.1.1-ci.deb

This image will be updated for all Major and Minor releases of Elasticsearch (i.e. 6.0 and 5.2 but not 5.1.x)
