lindig/xs-opam repository overview

Opam Repository for XenServer

Build Status

This Opam repository supports building components in the XenServer toolstack implemented in OCaml.

Adding the OPAM Repository

This repository has been tested with OCaml 4.06.1. To initialize an OPAM configuration with this compiler version, run:

opam init --comp=4.06.1
eval `opam config env`

You can add this Git repository as a remote OPAM repository:

opam repo add xs-opam https://github.com/xapi-project/xs-opam.git

If you are using OCaml 4.02.3, you can still use this as a repository by adding instead

opam repo add xs-opam https://github.com/xapi-project/xs-opam.git#1.8.0

Building packages

To install a package it's enough to run

opam depext $PKG
opam install $PKG

however, for development, it is often useful to clone the package sources and only install its dependencies, leaving the job to build the package and make changes to the developer. This can be done as follows:

opam depext $PKG
opam install --deps-only $PKG

After that, you can enter the folder containing the cloned sources and run the appropriate build command.

Refer to the relevant opam files in xs-opam to check how to build specific repositories. All our packages are currently using oasis or jbuilder as build systems.

The pin command in opam is often useful when writing lower level libraries. For more information see the relevant opam blog page or the official documentation.

Layout of This Repository

Packages are organised into namespaces:

  • upstream: packages that we don't control, with fixed versions.
  • upstream-extra: packages that we don't control and don't require as a build dependency, with fixed versions.
  • xs: packages that we control, with fixed versions.
  • xs-extra: packages that we control, following their respective master branch.

The namespaces are treated differently as part of the build process of XenServer components but this should not concern an Opam user - packages in all namespaces together form the repository and there is no difference between them.

./packages/upstream
./packages/upstream-extra
./packages/xs
./packages/xs-extra

The packages/ hierarchy contains Opam entries for each package. These can be copied untouched from other, existing Opam repositories. The packages/ is basically what you get when using this repository as a remote Opam repository. A typical entry consists of three files:

  • descr - textual desciption
  • opam - dependencies and build instructions
  • url - link to source code

Note how versions are designated:

packages/xs/cdrom.0.9.2
packages/xs/crc.1.0.0
packages/xs-extra/message-switch.master
packages/xs-extra/rrddump.master
packages/xs-extra/vncproxy.master
packages/xs-extra/wsproxy.master
packages/xs/fd-send-recv.1.0.2
packages/xs/nbd.2.1.2
packages/xs/netlink.0.2.1

Travis

A subset of packages in this repository are built on the Travis CI service. These are library packages that part of XenServer. The full set of packages is built as well but failure to build it doesn't count as a build failure so far. See .travis.yml and travis.sh for details.

Docker Images

After each successful Travis build, Docker images containing the compiled packages are pushed to Docker Hub: https://hub.docker.com/r/xenserver/xs-opam/tags/

Currently the following images are pushed to Docker hub:

  • xenserver/xs-opam:latest: This image contains the packages in the packages/upstream and packages/xs directories.
  • xenserver/xs-opam:latest_extra: In addition to the packages in xenserver/xs-opam:latest, this image also contains the packages in the packages/upstream-extra and packages/xs-extra directories.

Among other things, these images can be used to build toolstack components. However, this only works if the UID of the current user is 1000, which is the default for most desktop Linux installations. Packages in the packages/upstream and packages/xs directories only need the latest image for building, packages in the packages/upstream-extra and packages/xs-extra directories usually require the latest_extra image.

For example, the ezxenstore project can be built in the following way using the xenserver/xs-opam:latest image:

docker run --rm -itv $PWD:/mnt -w /mnt xenserver/xs-opam:latest
# Now we are inside the container.
make release

The following commands can be used to build xapi with the xenserver/xs-opam:latest_extra image:

docker run --rm -itv $PWD:/mnt -w /mnt xenserver/xs-opam:latest_extra
# Now we are inside the container.
./configure
make

Building the Docker Images Locally

You can use the build-docker.sh script to to run the Travis tests and build the above Docker images locally. You need to supply the same environment variables that are specified for our Travis build in the .travis.yml file.

For example, the following command can be used to compile the packages in the packages/upstream and packages/xs directories on CentOS 7, using OCaml 4.06.0, and xs-opam instead of the default one as the base OPAM repository:

env OCAML_VERSION=4.06.0 DISTRO=centos-7 BASE_REMOTE=/xs-opam ./tools/build-docker.sh

This produces a Docker image called local-build containing the compiled packages.

The following command can be used to build all packages in this repository with the same parameters as above:

env OCAML_VERSION=4.06.0 DISTRO=centos-7 BASE_REMOTE=/xs-opam COMPILE_ALL=1 ./tools/build-docker.sh

Neat tricks

  • list all the dependencies of a package: opam list --rec --required-by $PKG --short

  • list all packages depending on a package: opam list --rec --depends-on $PKG --short

  • install system dependencies of a package: opam depext $PKG

  • create opam sandboxes for library development: opam switch $SWITCH_NAME --alias-of=4.02.3

  • obtain sources of an opam package without knowing the repository: opam source $PKG

Refer to the opam manual for additional information.

Additional tools

The tools folder contains additional utilities.

  • opam-updates.py: you can create the following file

    cat <<EOF > opam-update.sh
    sudo yum install python-requests -y
    python tools/opam-updates.py . --auth USER:TOKEN
    EOF

where USER is your github user name and token is a private access token (refer to opam-updates.py --help for additional details), and run docker run --rm -itv $PWD:/mnt -w /mnt xenserver/xs-opam:latest sh opam-update.sh to prepare the local clone of xs-opam with the xs-opam package updates coming from the upstream opam repository.

  • dev-repo.sh: report all Git repos from opam files

    $ ./tools/dev-repos.sh 2> /dev/null | head -5
