Make sure you have VPN activated to use the application without any problems!

German version of the instructions below

(based on https://www.makeuseof.com/how-to-install-docker-windows-10-11/)

ENGLISH VERSION OF THE INSTRUCTIONS

-------------------------Install and run the application on Windows-------------------------

Installation of the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL 2) – Program is needed for Docker:

Before you install Docker through WSL 2, you’ll have first to install WSL 2 (with the default Ubuntu image).

  1. Launch the Start menu, search for cmd and select Run as administrator.
  2. Enter the following command: wsl --update and press Enter. The Subsystem is now getting installed, this may take a few minutes. Allow any upcoming request.

Installation of the required programs:

Use Google Chrome or download Firefox for Windows if you haven´t already installed it by clicking on this link: https://www.mozilla.org/de/firefox/windows/. Install it by double clicking it in the Download folder. Follow the instructions carefully.

For optimum performance on Windows, I recommend installing Docker by integrating Docker Desktop with WSL 2.

  1. Download Docker Desktop for Windows by clicking on this link: https://docs.docker.com/desktop/install/windows-install/. Install it by double clicking it in the Download folder. Follow the instructions carefully.
  2. Restart your system afterwards for the changes to take effect.

If you are not admin on the current system, you need to add the user first to the docker user group. Otherwise you can skip step 1 to 5.

  1. Launch the Start menu, search for Computermanagement and select Run as administrator.
  2. Expand Local Users and Groups, and select Groups.
  3. Find the docker-users group, right-click and select Add to group.
  4. Add your user account or accounts by name (click on check name to make sure it was found). Click on OK afterward.
  5. Sign out and sign back in again for these changes to take effect.
  6. Launch Docker Desktop from the ***Start menu (this might take a while), and navigate to Settings (Settingswheel) > General.
  7. Ensure the Use WSL 2 based engine check box is enabled.

If an error occurs please have a look at the official documentation: https://docs.docker.com/desktop/install/windows-install/.

Setup the docker container for the application:

  1. Open the explorer and pick a folder where you want to store the files needed for the application to run.
  2. When you found a suitable one, click onto the part without text in the line containing the path. The whole path should be marked blue now. If this is the case enter cmd there and hit Enter.
  3. There should now a command window being opened which is using the current directory for execution. If this is the case, copy the following into the line and hit Enter: docker pull lucag97/bme
  4. Close the settings and click straight in the upper left corner on Images. There should be an Image called lucag97/bme now. Click on the “play button” saying Run if you move the mouse over it.
  5. In the popup click on the arrow pointing downwards on the right side of Optional settings. Click in the line which says Host Port and enter 0 (zero) in there to pick a random free port. Click on Run afterwards.
  6. It automatically opens the container interface. The container is now correctly set up. You can open the application now by clicking on the blue link directly above Inspect. This will open a browser window showing the application (starting page is a language choice).

This section is only for users who don´t use Firefox or Chrome as their usual browser:

  1. Click in the URL search bar and copy everything there by pressing Ctrl + C at the same time.
  2. Since this application is best usable in Firefox, you should open Firefox now if it is not set as your usual browser. To do this, click on the windows symbol in the bottom left corner. Enter firefox in there and open it by double clicking on the logo.
  3. Paste the copied URL into the URL search bar and hit Enter. Now the application is set up correctly. (The language choice should appear again)

-------------------------Install and run the application on MacOS-------------------------

Install the required programs:

Download Firefox for MacOS if you haven´t already installed it by clicking on this link: https://www.mozilla.org/de/firefox/mac/. Install it by double clicking it in the Download folder. Follow the instructions.
