Data can be uploaded using an\nExcel Spreadsheet and (optional) a shapefile delineating the spatial\nlocation of sites. Prioritizations are generated using mixed integer\nprogramming techniques. The performance of candidate prioritizations can\nbe examined using summary statistics and tables. Finally, data and\nprioritizations can also be downloaded for subsequent analysis.\n\n## Usage\n\nThe application is [available online](https://ncc.carleton.ca). Please\nnote that you must use [Google Chrome](https://www.google.com/chrome/)\nfor it to work. Since this application requires data in a specific\nformat, please refer to the [What Template Maker\napplication](https://github.com/NCC-CNC/whattemplatemaker) for preparing\ninput data.\n\n\n\n\n\n

\n\n## Installation\n\nThe application is available as an online service provided by the\n[Nature Conservancy of Canada](https://natureconservancy.ca/en/). If you\nneed to run the application on your own computer, then you can run it\nusing the [R statistical computing\nenvironment](https://www.r-project.org/),\n[Docker](https://www.docker.com/), or [Docker\nCompose](https://docs.docker.com/compose/).\n\n### Using R\n\nTo use this method, you will need to install the [R statistical\ncomputing environment](https://www.r-project.org/). After completing the\ninstallation, you can install the application using the following R\ncode:\n\n``` r\nif (!require(remotes)) install.packages(\"remotes\")\nremotes::install_github(\"NCC-CNC/whattodo\")\n```\n\nYou can then use the following R code to start the application and open\nit in your web browser:\n\n``` r\nwhattodo::run_app()\n```\n\n### Using Docker\n\nTo use this method, you will need to install [Docker\nEngine](https://www.docker.com/) ([see here for\ninstructions](https://docs.docker.com/get-docker/)). After completing\nthis step, you can install the application from the [DockerHub\nrepository](https://hub.docker.com/repository/docker/naturecons/whattodo).\nSpecifically, please use the following system command:\n\n``` bash\ndocker run -dp 3838:3838 --name whattodo -it naturecons/whattodo:latest\n```\n\nYou can then view the application by opening the following link in\n[Google Chrome](https://www.google.com/chrome/):\n. After you have finished using the application,\nyou can terminate it using the following system command. **Note that if\nyou don’t terminate the application once you are finished using it, then\nit will continue running in the background.**\n\n``` bash\ndocker rm -f whattodo\n```\n\n### Using Docker Compose\n\nTo use this method, you will need to install [Docker\nEngine](https://www.docker.com/) ([see here for\ninstructions](https://docs.docker.com/get-docker/)) and Docker Compose\n([see here for instructions](https://docs.docker.com/compose/install/)).\nAfter installing both programs, you can install the application by\n[cloning this\nrepository](https://docs.github.com/en/github/creating-cloning-and-archiving-repositories/cloning-a-repository-from-github/cloning-a-repository)\nand then using the following system commands:\n\n``` bash\ndocker-compose pull\ndocker-compose up -d\n```\n\nYou can then view the application by opening the following link in\n[Google Chrome](https://www.google.com/chrome/):\n. After you have finished using the application,\nyou can terminate it using the following system command. **Note that if\nyou don’t terminate the application once you are finished using it, then\nit will continue running in the background.**\n\n``` bash\ndocker-compose down\n```\n\n## Contributing\n\nThe application is a [Shiny web\napplication](https://mastering-shiny.org/) developed using the [R\nstatistical computing environment](https://www.r-project.org/).\nSpecifically, it uses the [`golem`\nframework](https://thinkr-open.github.io/golem/). This means that the\napplication is effectively an [R package](https://r-pkgs.org/) that\ncontains code for defining and launching the application ([see here for\nmore details](https://engineering-shiny.org/)). The R code files\n(located in the `./R` directory) are organized using the following\nnaming conventions:\n\n- `app_*`: Defines the web application:\n - `app_config.R`: Imports configuration settings.\n - `app_global.R`: Initializes the application. It performs a\n similar to the `global.R` file in typical Shiny applications.\n - `app_server.R`: Defines the (back-end) server-side logic for the\n application. It performs a similar role to the `server.R` file\n in typical Shiny applications.\n - `app_ui.R`: Defines the (font-end) user interface for the\n application. It performs a similar role to the `ui.R` file in\n typical Shiny applications.\n- `server_*`: Defines components used to assemble the server-side\n logic for the application.\n- `ui_`\\*: Defines functions used to programmatically create HTML\n elements for the front-end of the application.\n- `fct_*`: Defines R functions used in the back-end of the\n application. These files contain code used to perform analyses and\n manipulate the classes.\n- `utils_*`: Defines utility R functions used in the back-end of the\n application.\n\n## Getting help\n\nThank you for checking out this application. If you encounter any\nsoftware defects (e.g. application crashes, unexpected behavior, or\nspelling mistakes), please feel free to post them on the [issue\ntracker](https://github.com/NCC-CNC/whattodo/issues). If you have any\nquestions about using this application, please contact [Dr. Richard\nSchuster](https://www.richard-schuster.com/)\n() or [Prof. Joe\nBennett](https://carleton.ca/bennett-lab/lab-members/)\n([JosephBennett@cunet.carleton.ca](mailto:mailto:JosephBennett@cunet.carleton.ca)).\n","has_starred","hub_user","immutable_tags_settings",{"_75":11,"_76":77},"enabled","rules",[78],".*","is_automated","permissions",{"_82":21,"_83":11,"_84":11},"read","write","admin","user","storage_size",22208009947,"orgData","recentTags",[91,128],{"_92":44,"_93":94,"_95":96,"_97":98,"_99":100,"_50":117,"_118":94,"_119":33,"_120":56,"_57":121,"_122":123,"_124":108,"_125":117,"_126":66,"_127":21},"content_type","creator",12704953,"full_size",1360389369,"id",161750926,"images",[101],{"_102":103,"_104":105,"_106":48,"_107":108,"_109":110,"_111":112,"_113":48,"_114":-5,"_115":96,"_63":66,"_116":-5},"architecture","amd64","digest","sha256:abaef2a710ef0a8db6569a1e7dbe62bcb1bb8010311fffdc11d36ba5d8f4d639","features","last_pulled","2026-10-03T22:52:32.350447388Z","last_pushed","2022-06-05T21:37:01Z","os","linux","os_features","os_version","size","variant","2022-06-05T21:37:00.458048Z","last_updater","last_updater_username","media_type","latest","repository",15092549,"tag_last_pulled","tag_last_pushed","tag_status","v2",{"_92":44,"_93":94,"_104":129,"_95":130,"_97":131,"_99":132,"_50":136,"_118":94,"_119":33,"_120":56,"_57":137,"_122":123,"_124":134,"_125":136,"_126":66,"_127":21},"sha256:9c0b3496348e03aee5f99fadb7cb64c1da7100dd5962ed25ca1d9dd7dd866ccf",1427984907,564757644,[133],{"_102":103,"_104":129,"_106":48,"_107":134,"_109":135,"_111":112,"_113":48,"_114":-5,"_115":130,"_63":66,"_116":-5},"2026-10-06T07:00:03.805883359Z","2025-04-01T18:21:56.370473798Z","2025-04-01T18:21:56.955649Z","dev","sbxKitMetadata","isPotentialSpam","isHubSbxKitsEnabled","showSbxLogoOverride","sbxTrademarkText","displaySecurityMetadata","tagAttestations","tagsHaveAttestations",[],"selectedTag","attestationsUrl","routes/_layout.r.$namespace.$reponame.tags",{"_38":151,"_158":159,"_145":172,"_173":11},{"_40":152,"_42":153,"_45":46,"_47":48,"_49":11,"_50":51,"_52":53,"_54":154,"_57":35,"_32":33,"_58":59,"_60":44,"_61":62,"_63":64,"_65":66,"_67":-5,"_68":64,"_69":70,"_71":11,"_72":33,"_73":155,"_79":11,"_80":157,"_85":33,"_86":87},[],[44],[56],{"_75":11,"_76":156},[78],{"_82":21,"_83":11,"_84":11},"tags",{"_160":161,"_162":-5,"_163":-5,"_164":165},"count",2,"next","previous","results",[166,169],{"_92":44,"_93":94,"_104":129,"_95":130,"_97":131,"_99":167,"_50":136,"_118":94,"_119":33,"_120":56,"_57":137,"_122":123,"_124":134,"_125":136,"_126":66,"_127":21},[168],{"_102":103,"_104":129,"_106":48,"_107":134,"_109":135,"_111":112,"_113":48,"_114":-5,"_115":130,"_63":66,"_116":-5},{"_92":44,"_93":94,"_95":96,"_97":98,"_99":170,"_50":117,"_118":94,"_119":33,"_120":56,"_57":121,"_122":123,"_124":108,"_125":117,"_126":66,"_127":21},[171],{"_102":103,"_104":105,"_106":48,"_107":108,"_109":110,"_111":112,"_113":48,"_114":-5,"_115":96,"_63":66,"_116":-5},[],"canDeleteTags","actionData","errors"]
