nawaman/workspace repository overview

CodingBooth WorkSpace

CodingBooth WorkSpace provides prebuilt, developer-ready Docker images that power fully reproducible development environments — from lightweight shells to full graphical desktops.

These images are designed to be launched via the workspace.sh script found in the WorkSpace project or its wrapper found in the WorkSpace Wrapper. They give you a clean, consistent, permission-safe dev environment on any machine: Linux, macOS, or Windows (via WSL/Git Bash).

Whether you're using VS Code in the browser, Jupyter notebooks, or a full XFCE/KDE desktop inside Docker — WorkSpace images make it effortless.

What This Repository Provides

This Docker Hub repository hosts multiple WorkSpace variants, each preconfigured for a different style of development:

Base & CLI

  • container Minimal environment with essential tools — great for scripting, builds, CI, and lightweight automation.

Web-based IDEs

  • ide-codeserver A full VS Code experience in your browser using code-server.

  • ide-notebook Jupyter Notebook environment with Bash and utilities — perfect for data exploration, documentation, and runnable “Bash notebooks”.

Desktop Environments (Browser Accessible)

  • desktop-xfce, desktop-kde, desktop-lxqt Full Linux desktops accessible via web browser (noVNC). Ideal for GUI-based IDEs like IntelliJ, PyCharm, Eclipse, or graphical workflows.

Every variant includes a curated selection of command-line tools (git, curl, jq, nano, gh, tig, unzip, tree, zsh, etc.) so you can start working immediately.

Key Features

  • Reproducible development environments — same setup across every machine.
  • Host-identity mapping — files created inside the container are owned by your host user, eliminating root-permission headaches.
  • Simple launcher workflow — used with the workspace.sh script to build, run, or override variants on demand.
  • Fast onboarding — zero local installs, no dependency conflicts, no setup drift.
  • Browser-based or full-desktop options — customize the perfect dev environment for your project.

Getting Started

Use these images through the WorkSpace launcher script:

curl -fsSL -o workspace \
  https://github.com/NawaMan/WorkSpaceWrapper/releases/latest/download/workspace \
  && chmod +x workspace  \
  && ./workspace install \
  && ./workspace help

Launch a workspace:

./workspace

Or choose a variant:

./workspace.sh --variant codeserver

Access the running environment at: http://localhost:10000

Use Cases

  • Web/app development in a consistent VS Code environment
  • Jupyter-powered data analysis & documentation
  • GUI development using full Linux desktops inside Docker
  • Teaching, onboarding, workshops, and classroom setups
  • CI/CD pipelines requiring reproducible environments
  • Local builds with Docker-in-Docker support (optional)
