Topic maps provide\na way to describe complex relationships between abstract concepts and real-world (information) resources.\n\nWhy?\n----\n\nI built and published my first knowledge documentation tool in 2007 which I was still using until very recently, almost\nunmodified, twelve years later. If I remember correctly, it was built with `PHP version 5.2.5`_! Twelve years is an\neternity in software terms. Nowadays, my preferred choice for web development is `Python`_ together with the `Flask`_\nweb development framework. What's more, after twelve years of using my own and other knowledge management tools, I have\nseveral improvements in mind for the next version (many of which are simplifications, for that matter). And perhaps one\nof the most important reasons for building a new tool like this is that I want it to be open source: both\nContextualise (the web application) and TopicDB (the actual topic maps engine on top of which Contextualise\nis built -- also written by me) are licensed with the permissive open source `MIT license`_.\n\nFeature Support\n---------------\nThe following provides an overview of Contextualise's existing (and planned) feature set:\n\n**Existing Features**\n\n* Support for multiple (self-contained) topic maps\n* Support for both private and public topic maps\n* Extensive support for notes including the ability to attach a note to an existing topic and convert a note into a topic\n* `Markdown`_-based text editor for topic text and notes\n* The ability to attach files (including images, PDFs, and so forth) to topics\n* The ability to attach (`glTF`_-based) 3D models to topics with an accompanying interactive 3D model viewer\n* Powerful (semantic) associations with the ability to create typed associations with role-based members\n* Flexible filtering of topic occurrences and associations by scope (that is, context)\n* Interactive visual network graph of related topics (allowing navigation between topics)\n* Auto-complete on all form fields that expect a topic reference\n\n**Missing Version 1.0 Features**\n\n* `Augmented Reality `_ (AR) support for 3D occurrences\n* Full-text search\n* Google Maps support\n* `Timeline `_ support allowing to navigate between topics using a visual timeline component\n* WikiMedia API integration to automatically enhance existing topics with relevant information from `Wikipedia `_\n* Semantic tagging\n\nFor a more exhaustive list of missing features take a look at Contextualise's `list of issues `_.\n\nInstall the Development Version\n-------------------------------\n\nContextualise officially supports Python 3.6–3.8.\n\nIf you have `Git `_ installed on your system, it is possible to install the development version\nof Contextualise.\n\nCertain build prerequisites need to be met including the presence of a C compiler, the Python\nheader files, the ``libpq`` header files and the ``pg_config`` program as outlined, here: `Build\nprerequisites `_.\n\nThen do::\n\n $ git clone https://github.com/brettkromkamp/contextualise\n $ cd contextualise\n $ pip install -e .\n\nThe ``pip install -e .`` command allows you to follow the development branch as it changes by creating links in the\nright places and installing the command line scripts to the appropriate locations.\n\nThen, if you want to update Contextualise at any time, in the same directory do::\n\n $ git pull\n\n`TopicDB`_, the topic maps engine on top of which Contextualise is built is regularly updated. However, the version\nof TopicDB published on `PyPI `_ could lag behind. For that reason, it is\nrecommended that you also install TopicDB directly from GitHub::\n\n $ pip uninstall topic-db\n $ git clone https://github.com/brettkromkamp/topic-db.git\n $ cd topic-db\n $ pip install -e .\n\nThen, if you want to update TopicDB at any time, in the same directory do::\n\n $ git pull\n\nAfter having installed Contextualise, you would have to separately install and configure the PostgreSQL database. Brief\ninstructions on how to do so are provided, here: `Setting up the TopicDB\ndatabase `_. You need to ensure that the\ndatabase username, password and database name match with the ``settings.ini`` file in the project's root folder.\n\nFinally, to run the application in **development** mode you need to change to the project's top-level directory and set\ntwo environment variables followed by running the ``flask`` command with the ``run`` parameter::\n\n $ export FLASK_APP=contextualise\n $ export FLASK_ENV=development\n $ flask run\n\nYou should see something similar to the following in the terminal::\n\n * Serving Flask app \"contextualise\" (lazy loading)\n * Environment: development\n * Debug mode: on\n * Running on http://127.0.0.1:5000/ (Press CTRL+C to quit)\n * Restarting with stat\n * Debugger is active!\n * Debugger PIN: 521-258-444\n\nOpening the browser and navigating to ``http://127.0.0.1:5000/`` should result in showing the application's *Welcome*\npage.\n\n.. image:: resources/welcome-page.png\n :alt: The Contextualise Welcome page\n\n*The Contextualise Welcome page*\n\nFlask's built-in server is not suitable for production purposes. However, it is quite straightforward to run\nContextualise using `Gunicorn `_, a Python WSGI HTTP server::\n\n $ gunicorn -w 4 -b 0.0.0.0:5000 contextualise.wsgi:app\n\nFor further information for properly running a flask application in production, take a look at Flask's own\n`documentation `_.\n\nDocker\n------\n\nSupport for running Contextualise within `Docker `_ is still in development. To run it from the\nroot of a local clone of the source:\n\n1. Copy ``settings-docker-sample.ini`` to ``settings.ini`` file in the root and replace your email settings. For example::\n\n [DATABASE]\n Username = postgres\n Password = postgres\n Database = postgres\n Host = db\n Port = 5432\n\n [EMAIL]\n Username = changeme\n Password = changeme\n Server = mail.changeme.com\n Sender = Change Me\n\n2. Run ``docker-compose up --build`` for a production like deployment running behind ``gunicorn`` in an immutable image\n so any source code changes require a rebuild. If, however, you want a more dynamic environment for development\n add in the development config file with ``docker-compose -f docker-compose.yml -f docker-compose.dev.yml up --build`` where source changes occur immediately within the image. Modifying ``requirements.txt`` requires a rebuild of the image however.\n\nFirst-Time Use\n--------------\n\nSeveral users (with the roles of ``admin`` and ``user``, respectively) are created by the application for testing\npurposes. To log in as the admin user, provide the following credentials:\n``admin@contextualise.io`` (user name) and ``Passw0rd1`` (password). To log in as a non-admin user, provide the\nfollowing credentials: ``user@contextualise.io`` and ``Passw0rd1``.\n\nTutorial\n--------\n\nPending.\n\nDocumentation\n-------------\n\nPending.\n\nMiscellaneous\n-------------\n\nCurrently, I am using Contextualise for worldbuilding purposes of the Brave Robot fictional universe including its `Codex\nRoboticus `_.\n\n.. image:: resources/codex-roboticus1.png\n :alt: Codex Roboticus\n\nHow to Contribute\n-----------------\n\n#. Check for open issues or open a fresh issue to start a discussion around a feature idea or a bug.\n#. Fork `the repository`_ on GitHub to start making your changes to the **master** branch (or branch off of it).\n#. Write a test which shows that the bug was fixed or that the feature works as expected.\n#. Send a pull request and bug the maintainer until it gets merged and published. :) Make sure to add yourself to AUTHORS_.\n\n.. _topic maps: https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa480048.aspx\n.. _world building: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Worldbuilding\n.. _TopicDB: https://github.com/brettkromkamp/topic-db\n.. _Knowledge Management Using Topic Maps: http://quesucede.com/page/show/id/frontpage\n.. _PHP version 5.2.5: http://php.net/ChangeLog-5.php#5.2.5\n.. _Python: https://www.python.org/\n.. _Flask: http://flask.pocoo.org/docs/1.0/\n.. _MIT license: https://github.com/brettkromkamp/contextualise/blob/master/LICENSE\n.. _the repository: https://github.com/brettkromkamp/contextualise\n.. _AUTHORS: https://github.com/brettkromkamp/contextualise/blob/master/AUTHORS.rst\n.. _Markdown: https://daringfireball.net/projects/markdown/syntax\n.. _glTF: https://www.khronos.org/gltf/\n","has_starred","hub_user","immutable_tags_settings",{"_75":11,"_76":77},"enabled","rules",[78],".*","is_automated","permissions",{"_82":21,"_83":11,"_84":11},"read","write","admin","user","storage_size",624571003,"orgData","recentTags",[91],{"_92":44,"_93":94,"_95":96,"_97":98,"_99":100,"_50":118,"_119":94,"_120":33,"_121":56,"_57":122,"_123":124,"_125":109,"_126":118,"_127":66,"_128":21},"content_type","creator",4119,"full_size",458178644,"id",86459583,"images",[101],{"_102":103,"_104":105,"_106":107,"_108":109,"_110":111,"_112":113,"_114":107,"_115":-5,"_116":96,"_63":66,"_117":-5},"architecture","amd64","digest","sha256:506dd604091fa44f8d6c385b0535d1f73477211d19c35f3d9a6f70fa2bf03860","features","","last_pulled","2026-10-01T15:47:47.665851965Z","last_pushed","2020-02-14T03:37:37Z","os","linux","os_features","os_version","size","variant","2020-02-14T03:37:37.016183Z","last_updater","last_updater_username","media_type","latest","repository",8475873,"tag_last_pulled","tag_last_pushed","tag_status","v2","sbxKitMetadata","isPotentialSpam","isHubSbxKitsEnabled","showSbxLogoOverride","sbxTrademarkText","displaySecurityMetadata","tagAttestations","tagsHaveAttestations",[],"selectedTag","attestationsUrl","routes/_layout.r.$namespace.$reponame.tags",{"_38":142,"_149":150,"_136":159,"_160":11},{"_40":143,"_42":144,"_45":46,"_47":48,"_49":11,"_50":51,"_52":53,"_54":145,"_57":35,"_32":33,"_58":59,"_60":44,"_61":62,"_63":64,"_65":66,"_67":-5,"_68":62,"_69":70,"_71":11,"_72":33,"_73":146,"_79":11,"_80":148,"_85":33,"_86":87},[],[44],[56],{"_75":11,"_76":147},[78],{"_82":21,"_83":11,"_84":11},"tags",{"_151":64,"_152":-5,"_153":-5,"_154":155},"count","next","previous","results",[156],{"_92":44,"_93":94,"_95":96,"_97":98,"_99":157,"_50":118,"_119":94,"_120":33,"_121":56,"_57":122,"_123":124,"_125":109,"_126":118,"_127":66,"_128":21},[158],{"_102":103,"_104":105,"_106":107,"_108":109,"_110":111,"_112":113,"_114":107,"_115":-5,"_116":96,"_63":66,"_117":-5},[],"canDeleteTags","actionData","errors"]
