ntninja/alpine-dovecot repository overview

Note: This container is automatically built by docker-image-rebuilder every night and will receive updates whenever the upstream Alpine packages change. (Dockerfile)

Dovecot as packaged by the most recent version of the Alpine Linux distribution including all available plugins:

  • pigeonhole (ManageSieve support, mail delivery and IMAP filtering plugins)
  • pgsql, mysql & sqlite (Database user authentication and processing)
  • gssapi & ldap (User authentication)

The popular antispam plugin is not included as its functionality can now be implemented using the more flexible IMAPSieve plugin.

Quick Start

Only very minimal modifications to the Dovecot configuration are done during build:

  • Default user provider is passwdfile instead of system (which is useless in a container)
  • Log to stdout and stderr instead of syslog
  • Default mail location is set to /var/lib/mail

This is sufficient a simple mail retrieval agent setup:

  1. Create an user account file named user in there directory where you would like to run Dovecot and add some entries:

user1:$6$qhUUeSCTt3XxjhkF$NCfmhmfcjoAnSuxjHlw1.vlTVrr1xAWBPaV67q.bZe0PR8GqogWgf.m84Tk5NCJ5CfXdqcw4JpBfuEBvL1/bG1:1000:1000:::: user2:$6$CGXjhMNcTinLPHv9$xzslza5p0191dstyXqcDmSp1Ef7ofK4UBuT1yQ6AS.2YZ1zbQlw6BepEMhWznGAjuppr.U/zHLqpfdSK5G.t8/:1001:1001::::

    The format basic format is `<username>:<password-crypt>:<uid>:<gid>::::`, for details see [the documentation](https://wiki.dovecot.org/AuthDatabase/PasswdFile). (Please don't reuse the above "hackme" password entries, thx.)

 2. Run the container with the required volumes set:

    ```
docker run -v "${PWD}/mail:/var/lib/mail" \
                -v "${PWD}/keys:/etc/ssl/dovecot" \
                -v "${PWD}/users:/etc/dovecot/users:ro" ntninja/alpine-dovecot
  1. Done!
Advanced Usage
If you want to modify Dovecot's configuration, it is usually easiest to copy the entire configuration from the image before making changes:
docker pull ntninja/alpine-dovecot
container_id="$(docker container create ntninja/alpine-dovecot)"
docker cp "${container_id}:/etc/dovecot" dovecot-config
docker container rm "${container_id}"
The Dovecot configuration files should now be in the dovecot-config folder inside the current directory and can be mounted as a volume when starting the container.
