Until your Elasticsearch node is fully secured, consider NOT exposing it to the internet. Instead, just make it available internally to your application servers only.
Basic security is possible using BASIC auth, but that's only possible with TLS transport:
Add this to your environment:
xpack.security.enabled="true"
ELASTICSEARCH_USERNAME=username
ELASTICSEARCH_PASSWORD=password
xpack.security.transport.ssl.enable="true"
But you'll also need to set up the certificates, so read into it here: https://www.elastic.co/guide/en/elasticsearch/reference/current/configuring-tls.html
