openvswitch/ovs repository overview

⁠Open vSwitch:

It is a multilayer software switch licensed under the open source Apache 2 license.

Our goal is to implement a production quality switch platform that supports standard management interfaces and opens the forwarding functions to programmatic extension and control.

This repo contains the container images for each stable ovs release so that end user can just docker pull and run ovs on demand.

⁠Start ovsdb-server in container:

docker run -itd --net=host --name=ovsdb-server openvswitch/ovs: 2.11.2_debian ovsdb-server

⁠Start ovs-vswitchd in container:

For ovs vswitchd, we need to load ovs kernel modules on host.

If user wants to load kernel modules from containers to host, follow documentation guide for building docker image with kernel module.

Host kernel modules like openvswitch, geneve, stt, etc. should be installed on host to use version specific images in this repo as it it very hard to maintain container images with different kernel versions

docker run -itd --net=host --name=ovs-vswitchd --volumes-from=ovsdb-server --privileged openvswitch/ovs: 2.11.2_debian ovs-vswitchd
