orfeotoolbox/otb repository overview

General Information

Orfeo ToolBox (OTB) is an open-source project for state-of-the-art remote sensing. Built on the shoulders of the open-source geospatial community, it can process high resolution optical, multispectral and radar images at the terabyte scale. A wide variety of applications are available: from ortho-rectification or pansharpening, all the way to classification, SAR processing, and much more!

For more information, please visit our website : https://www.orfeo-toolbox.org/

Usage

Linux (python 3.8 bindings by default) / Windows with WSL subsystem

If you only run CLI tools, you can launch the docker image with :

docker run -it orfeotoolbox/otb:9.1.0

Linux with python 3.10 or python 3.12

OTB 9.1 is compiled by default for Ubuntu 20.04 until April 2025. OTB 9.1 images for Ubuntu 22.04 with python 3.10 bindings and ubuntu 24.04 with python 3.12 bindings are also available. This can be usefull if your project uses one of these popular version of python and you want to interact with OTB without having to recompile the bindings.

docker run -it orfeotoolbox/otb:9.1.0_ubuntu22

OR

docker run -it orfeotoolbox/otb:9.1.0_ubuntu24

Linux with QT Gui applications

if you plan to use the GUI applications available until OTB 8.1.2, you have to call docker with the following arguments :

docker run -it -e DISPLAY=$DISPLAY -v /tmp/.X11-unix/:/tmp/.X11-unix/ --device=/dev/dri:/dev/dri orfeotoolbox/otb:8.1.2 monteverdi

MacOS

Apple Silicone M1/M2 architecture (ARM64)

you have to specify the platform as a command line option :

docker run -it --platform=linux/amd64 orfeotoolbox/otb:9.1.0

Intel Architecture (x86_64)

On intel Macs, you can call docker without the platform.

docker run -it orfeotoolbox/otb:9.1.0

Note on use of GUI Apps

If you want to use GUI Apps, they use X11 which is not embedded in MacOS anymore, you can download it at : https://www.xquartz.org/ (the latest version is available both for Intel and Apple silicone processors) After installing xquartz, you have to configure it :

  • Launch XQuartz. Under the XQuartz menu, select Preferences
  • Go to the security tab and ensure "Allow connections from network clients" is checked.

you should be able to use the GUI Apps with the following call:

xhost + localhost

docker run -it --env="DISPLAY=host.docker.internal:0" -v /tmp/.X11-unix/:/tmp/.X11-unix/:rw --platform=linux/amd64 orfeotoolbox/otb:8.1.2 monteverdi
