Official image for OviOS Linux v6
33
If the host system doesn't have ZFS available this image can be used to explore the OviOS commands and get a feel of what it can do.
docker pull ovios/ovios-v6-polaris:latest
sudo docker run -d \
--network host \
-v /dev/:/dev/ \
-v /ovios/:/ovios/ \
-v /sys/kernel/config:/sys/kernel/config:rw \
--privileged \
--cgroupns=host \
--tmpfs /run \
--tmpfs /run/lock \
<image ID> /sbin/init
Once you start the container, first login to bash to make sure systemd doesn't hang up all services:
[ovi@oviosdc ~]$ sudo docker exec -it ovios bash
[root@544f63451dbc /]# systemctl stop systemd-firstboot.service
[root@544f63451dbc /]# systemctl cancel
[root@544f63451dbc /]#
Run "os" or exit and re-login with
[ovi@oviosdc ~]$ sudo docker exec -it ovios os
OVIOS LINUX — Shell Engine started

» System ready. Type a command to begin...
ovios-shell ➤
Explanation: --privileged is needed to mount /dev/zfs and /proc in the running container. the command: su - takes you directly to the ovios-shell Type 'lscmd' or '?' for a list of all commands.
There are two users available in the OviOS: root and ovios. Both have the password ovios. Type 'exit' or 'su-ovios' to drop to the Linux bash shell.
Deploy on your favourite Linux host with ZFS installed.
You should create the pools on your host system.
zpool create <pool name> <disk1 disk2 ...>
zpool create <pool name 2> <disk1 disk2 ...>
and so on
Start the OviOS container.
If you want to expose SMB, NFS and iSCSI to the network, which is the scope of OviOS Linux, run with the host network.
sudo docker run -d \
--network host \
-v /dev/:/dev/ \
-v /ovios/:/ovios/ \
-v /sys/kernel/config:/sys/kernel/config:rw \
--privileged \
--cgroupns=host \
--tmpfs /run \
--tmpfs /run/lock \
<image ID> /sbin/init
At this point you want to start logging and apply the ovios pools flags:
ovios-shell> ovios_restore all
Configuring pool backups...
Finished configuring pool backups
Configuring pool local_data...
Finished configuring pool local_data
iSCSI is not running. Cannot setup LUNs and iSCSI Targets.
ovios-shell>
Disable skip.import, to be able to import pools if needed:
ovios-shell> options skip.import 0
Changing option: skip.import ==> off
ovios-shell>
Configure your storage protocols and make a backup to be able to easily restore if you have to restart the container.
In this example we're storing the OS backup on the local_data pool:
ovios-shell> options system.backup.pool local_data
Configuration system.backup.pool updated.
ovios-shell> sync-config bo
osbackup dataset doesn't exist on local_data. Creating now..
Created osbackup dataset
Creating /ovios/local_data/osbackup/osbackup-2020-10-15_21-18-23.tar.gz ...
Created backup osbackup-2020-10-15_21-18-23.tar.gz
ovios-shell>
To restore to this config after a crash, reboot etc.
ovios-shell> su-ovios
bae0113e3ce5:~ # cd /
bae0113e3ce5:/ # sudo tar xvf /ovios/local_data/osbackup/osbackup-2020-10-15_21-18-23.tar.gz
.
.
.
bae0113e3ce5:~ # exit
ovios-shell>
To exclude pools from bein exported / imported by the ovios-shell
In this example we only want to manage the pool called local_data with OviOS.
ovios-shell> options exclude.pools "WEBPAGE backups"
Configuration exclude.pools updated.
ovios-shell>
ovios-shell ➤ service zfs status
[zfs-admin] Status for all imported pools:
WEBPAGE state: ONLINE readonly off mounted: no mountpoint: /WEBPAGE Managed by OviOS: NO
backups state: ONLINE readonly off mounted: yes mountpoint: /ovios/backups Managed by OviOS: NO
local_data state: ONLINE readonly off mounted: no mountpoint: /ovios/local_data Managed by OviOS: YES
