Device and Update Management

The Device and Update Management software (DaUM) is used for updating firmware, software and certificates for devices with an integrated OPC UA server.

Installation guide for the Device and Update Management in a Docker container

The latest Device and Update Management Docker images can be pulled from DockerHub. To run such a container with a valid license, a setup with Wibu License components is required. The following manual steps are required for this setup.

All needed files can be downloaded here in the downloads section: https://www.phoenixcontact.com/en-pc/products/software-daum-windows-service-1542953#

  1. Install the CodeMeter Runtime on a host computer https://www.wibu.com/de/support/anwendersoftware/anwendersoftware.html
  2. Import the DaUM-Basic license into CodeMeter (DaUM-Basic.WibuCmRaU)
  3. Install Docker and Docker Compose
  4. Create a daum-workspace working directory
  5. Place the docker-compose.yml and the appsettings.daum.json files in the working directory.
  6. Open the docker-compose.yml file in a text editor
  7. Replace the IP after CM_REMOTE_SERVER with the IP or hostname of the computer running Codemeter
  8. Run 'docker compose up' from within the working directory
  9. The Device and Update Management service should run on port 8080, e.g. http://localhost:8080. (The port and other parameters can be adjusted in the docker-compose.yml)
  10. Purchase a DaUM update license and receive ticket ID. https://www.phoenixcontact.com/en-pc/products/software-daum-windows-service-1542953#

Internet is available on the PC and a web browser (UI) is available:

  1. activate ticket ID via Web-Depot: https://licence01.phoenixcontact.com/webdepot/index.php
  2. follow the steps

Internet is not available on the PC: Scenario: DaUM is installed on a PC without an Internet connection. To activate the license, steps 1 to 3 and 5 are carried out on this PC; steps 4 and 6 require a PC with an Internet connection.

  1. Import .WibuCmLif file via the CodeMeter Command Prompt tool with the following commands: cmu -i -f <.WibuCmLif-> For example: cmu -i -f Phoenix_Contact_CmActLicense (6).WibuCmLif (----> use the Lif file received from Phoenix Contact here)
  2. The serial number of the new license container is displayed. Make a note of this serial number (if it is not displayed, it can be read out using cmu -l).
  3. Create the context file with the following commands: cmu -s <serial number of the license container> -c <FirmCode> -f <filename> For example: cmu -s 130-3229388864 -c 6000217 -f context.WibuCmRaC (----> only one example is given here for the serial number of the license container, the FirmCode of Phoenix Contact is always "6000217")
  4. Generate the license update file and transfer the file to Phoenix Contact License Central: Open the WebDepot URL (https://licence01.phoenixcontact.com/webdepot/index.php) in a browser on a PC with Internet access. Enter the ticket ID for the DaUM license in the input field and click on "Next". Select the license to be activated. Click on "Activate License". Select the CmContainer type: "Phoenix Contact CmActLicense" with CmActID "2000". Select "File-based license transfer".

Now enter the previously generated *.WibuCmRaC file and upload it to Phoenix Contact License Central with "Start Activation Now".

Then download the license update file generated by Phoenix Contact License Central.

  1. Import the *.WibuCmRaU file on the target system using the CodeMeter Command Prompt tool: cmu -i -f <filename> For example: cmu -i -f context.WibuCmRaU
  2. Now generate a *.WibuCmRaC file again as described in step 3. This file must be transferred to the Phoenix Contact License Central using the WebDepot in order to complete the license activation properly. To do this, click on "Next" in the WebDepot and enter the newly created *.WibuCmRaC file.

Note:

Upgrading to DaUM 2026.0 from earlier versions When updating to DaUM version 2026.0, the mount connection for “appsettings.daum.json” must remain active for this one-time process so that the settings can be transferred to the new version. The settings are then saved in the DaUM database, so the file can be removed after subsequent restarts.

Access rights for mounted directories or volumes You should always restrict access to mounted directories exclusively to administrators and the DaUM container. The root user should have full access to the directories, and the DaUM container requires at least read and write access.
