Using Squid to cache downloads automatically saves time and bandwidth and it is totally transparent to you.\n\n## Usage\n\nThis docker image is available as a trusted build on the docker index, so there's no setup required. Using this image for the first time will start a download. Further runs will be immediate, as the image will be cached locally.\n\nThe recommended way to run this container looks like this:\n\n docker run -d --name squid --net host --privileged riddopic/squid\n\nNext on your docker host you will need to setup an IPtables rule to transparently route all HTTP requests through the proxy running in the container:\n\n iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -p tcp --dport 80 -j REDIRECT --to 3129\n\n\n\tiptables -t nat -D PREROUTING -p tcp --dport 80 -j REDIRECT --to 3129\n\n\n### Inspecting the container\n\nIf you would like to have a look around or check the logs you can connect to the container using docker exec:\n\n docker exec -it squid /bin/ash\n\n## Tuning\n\nThe container can be tuned using environment variables.\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n

Variable	Description
`MAX_CACHE_OBJECT`	Squid has a maximum object cache size. Often when caching system packages vs standard web content it is valuable to increase this size. Use the `-e MAX_CACHE_OBJECT=1024` to set the max object size (in MB).
`DISK_CACHE_SIZE TT`	The squid disk cache size can be tuned. use `-e DISK_CACHE_SIZE=5000` to set the disk cache size (in MB).
`SQUID_DIRECTIVES_ONLY`	The contents of `squid.conf` will only be what's defined in `SQUID_DIRECTIVES` giving the user full control of squid.
`SQUID_DIRECTIVES`	This will append any contents of the environment variable to `squid.conf`. It is expected that you will use multi-line block quote for the contents.

\n\n\n### Persistent Cache\n\nWhen the container is terminated the cache is lost. To prevent this and maintain a persistent cache you can use a mounted volume. The cache location is `/var/cache/squid` so if you mount that as a volume you can get persistent caching. Use `-v /home/user/squid_cache:/var/cache/squid` in your command line to enable persistent caching.\n\n## License\n```\nAuthor:: Stefano Harding \nCopyright: 2014-2015, Stefano Harding\n\nLicensed under the Apache License, Version 2.0 (the \"License\");\nyou may not use this file except in compliance with the License.\nYou may obtain a copy of the License at\n\n http://www.apache.org/licenses/LICENSE-2.0\n\nUnless required by applicable law or agreed to in writing, software\ndistributed under the License is distributed on an \"AS IS\" BASIS,\nWITHOUT WARRANTIES OR CONDITIONS OF ANY KIND, either express or implied.\nSee the License for the specific language governing permissions and\nlimitations under the License.\n```\n","has_starred","hub_user","immutable_tags_settings",{"_75":11,"_76":77},"enabled","rules",[78],".*","is_automated","permissions",{"_82":21,"_83":11,"_84":11},"read","write","admin","user","storage_size",124426085,"orgData","recentTags",[91,128],{"_92":44,"_93":94,"_95":96,"_97":98,"_99":100,"_101":102,"_50":117,"_118":94,"_119":33,"_120":56,"_57":121,"_122":123,"_124":108,"_125":117,"_126":66,"_127":21},"content_type","creator",61541,"digest","sha256:02a1a39a485df0784c8dbc1944e7a230a53aae8de8875752fc9bb5a2c4296c33","full_size",19808968,"id",186694,"images",[103],{"_104":105,"_95":96,"_106":48,"_107":108,"_109":110,"_111":112,"_113":48,"_114":-5,"_115":98,"_63":66,"_116":-5},"architecture","amd64","features","last_pulled","2026-10-08T11:33:17.036374681Z","last_pushed","2016-10-02T18:50:40Z","os","linux","os_features","os_version","size","variant","2016-10-02T18:50:43.906198Z","last_updater","last_updater_username","media_type","latest","repository",223938,"tag_last_pulled","tag_last_pushed","tag_status","v2",{"_92":44,"_93":94,"_97":98,"_99":129,"_101":130,"_50":132,"_118":94,"_119":33,"_120":56,"_57":133,"_122":123,"_124":108,"_125":132,"_126":66,"_127":21},4549540,[131],{"_104":105,"_95":96,"_106":48,"_107":108,"_109":110,"_111":112,"_113":48,"_114":-5,"_115":98,"_63":66,"_116":-5},"2016-10-02T18:50:39.91569Z","0.1.0","sbxKitMetadata","isPotentialSpam","isHubSbxKitsEnabled","showSbxLogoOverride","sbxTrademarkText","displaySecurityMetadata","tagAttestations","tagsHaveAttestations",[],"selectedTag","attestationsUrl","routes/_layout.r.$namespace.$reponame.tags",{"_38":147,"_154":155,"_141":168,"_169":11},{"_40":148,"_42":149,"_45":46,"_47":48,"_49":11,"_50":51,"_52":53,"_54":150,"_57":35,"_32":33,"_58":59,"_60":-5,"_61":62,"_63":64,"_65":66,"_67":-5,"_68":62,"_69":70,"_71":11,"_72":33,"_73":151,"_79":21,"_80":153,"_85":33,"_86":87},[],[44],[56],{"_75":11,"_76":152},[78],{"_82":21,"_83":11,"_84":11},"tags",{"_156":157,"_158":-5,"_159":-5,"_160":161},"count",2,"next","previous","results",[162,165],{"_92":44,"_93":94,"_95":96,"_97":98,"_99":100,"_101":163,"_50":117,"_118":94,"_119":33,"_120":56,"_57":121,"_122":123,"_124":108,"_125":117,"_126":66,"_127":21},[164],{"_104":105,"_95":96,"_106":48,"_107":108,"_109":110,"_111":112,"_113":48,"_114":-5,"_115":98,"_63":66,"_116":-5},{"_92":44,"_93":94,"_97":98,"_99":129,"_101":166,"_50":132,"_118":94,"_119":33,"_120":56,"_57":133,"_122":123,"_124":108,"_125":132,"_126":66,"_127":21},[167],{"_104":105,"_95":96,"_106":48,"_107":108,"_109":110,"_111":112,"_113":48,"_114":-5,"_115":98,"_63":66,"_116":-5},[],"canDeleteTags","actionData","errors"]
