an easy to use valheim server based on the native linux server and steamcmd
100K+
an easy to launch, easy to use and native dedicated server for the early-access game valheim. This implementation might change, as the game does.
The images are build with podman, so the underlying format is OCI rather than docker, just to be compatible with future changes in docker and potentially kubernetes.
the server starts on the port 2456, but we have to keep the others open as well. you can configure your server via the environment variables.
it is encouraged that you mount in your own server and worlds directory, but not required.
To update your server simply restart the container. The entrypoint will check and download for a new version automatically. It will not, however, re-download the game, only patch if needed.
sample usage:
SERVER_DIRECTORY=/some/directory/valheim-server
WORLDS_DIRECTORY=/some/directory/valheim-worlds
docker run -d --name valheim-server \
-p 2456:2456/udp \
-p 2457:2457/udp \
-p 2458:2458/udp \
-v $SERVER_DIRECTORY:/server \
-v $WORLDS_DIRECTORY:/root/.config/unity3d/IronGate/Valheim/worlds \
-e SERVER_NAME="Some Valheim Server" \
-e SERVER_PASSWORD="Some Valheim Password" \
-e IS_PUBLIC=1 \
-e WORLD_NAME="Some Valheim World" \
--restart=always \

This is a little more complicated, than it should be. The ingame server list is slow and does not always list all servers. Your server may show up there under your configured name, but it is not guaranteed.
It is easier to add you server to your favourites. here is how:
It might take a moment, but you can open your game from there. You will be prompted for the password twice tho, once in the steam overlay, once in the game.
happy gaming!
