⁠SKIL CE for Docker

The Docker edition gives developers an easy way to train and deploy powerful deep learning models to production quickly and easily.

⁠Getting the bits

To pull the SKIL-CE image from docker hub, just use this command:

docker pull skymindops/skil-ce

⁠Run the SKIL server

To run the SKIL server, make sure your docker host has at least 8GB of RAM available and run the following command:

docker run --rm -it -p 9008:9008 -p 8080:8080 skymindops/skil-ce bash /start-skil.sh

The server will start and will be ready to use in a 2-5 minutes. If you are running it on your local linux machine you can access the SKIL UI by pointing your browser to http://localhost:9008⁠ On Mac or Windows the URL will need to be changed to the IP of the VM running docker (typically http://192.168.99.100:9008/⁠).

In the login screen enter admin for the username and password to get started.

⁠Persistent Data

The above command runs in a temporary container with embedded data stores, all data like notebooks will get erased when you stop the container. To persist your notebooks and models servers when using skil you need to use Docker's data management features. See Managing Data in Containers⁠ for additional information.

SKIL uses both the filesystem and zookeeper for state so the simplest way to persist your notebooks and model server configurations is to use a separate zookeeper container and use persistent data volumes for zookeeper and SKIL. You can do this with the following commands:

docker volume create --name zk-data
docker volume create --name zk-datalog
docker volume create --name skil-data
docker pull zookeeper
docker run --name zookeeper -v zk-data:/data -v zk-datalog:/datalog -d zookeeper
docker run --rm -it --name skil -v skil-data:/var/skil --env SKIL_EMBEDDED_DB_PATH=/var/skil/skildb --env ZOOKEEPER_EMBEDDED=false --env ZOOKEEPER_HOST=zookeeper --env ZOOKEEPER_PORT=2181 --link zookeeper:zookeeper -p 9008:9008 -p 8080:8080 skymindops/skil-ce bash /start-skil.sh

Afterwards you can stop SKIL and zookeeper with:

docker stop skil
docker stop zookeeper

and start it back again with:

docker start zookeeper
docker run --rm -it --name skil -v skil-data:/var/skil --env SKIL_EMBEDDED_DB_PATH=/var/skil/skildb --env ZOOKEEPER_EMBEDDED=false --env ZOOKEEPER_HOST=zookeeper --env ZOOKEEPER_PORT=2181 --link zookeeper:zookeeper -p 9008:9008 -p 8080:8080 skymindops/skil-ce bash /start-skil.sh

When SKIL starts the first time it performs some installation steps and can take up to 10 minutes before it is ready to use. Subsequent starts will be ready within 2 minutes.
