stacklayer/kubernetes repository overview

Welcome to the Stack Layer Community! 🚀

Hands-on educational lab container images built specifically for learning Kubernetes and Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS).

🎨 Why Multi-Version (v1 to v5)?

When practicing Kubernetes deployments, rolling updates, rollbacks, and traffic routing, testing with static pages makes it hard to see if your new pods are actually serving traffic.

Each version tag in this repository features a distinct background color and an updated Web Version tag (Web Ver: 1 through Web Ver: 5):

  • Instant Visual Verification: Refresh your browser during a rolling update to visibly watch pods transition from one color to another in real-time.
  • Trouble-Free Rollback Testing: Test kubectl rollout undo and immediately see the previous color restore with zero downtime.
  • Beginner & Family-Friendly: Clear, simple, and friendly design with no complex setup needed.

⚡ Quick Start

1. Run Locally with Docker

Test the container locally on port 8080:

docker run -d -p 8080:80 --name stacklayer-web stacklayer/kubernetes:nginx-v1

Open http://localhost:8080 in your browser to view the page.

2. Deploy on Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS)

Deploy the baseline image to your cluster:

kubectl create deployment stacklayer-web --image=stacklayer/kubernetes:nginx-v1
kubectl expose deployment stacklayer-web --type=LoadBalancer --port=80

Perform a live rolling update to version 2:

kubectl set image deployment/stacklayer-web nginx=stacklayer/kubernetes:nginx-v2

Watch the rolling update progress in real time:

kubectl rollout status deployment/stacklayer-web

⚠️ Educational Lab Disclaimer

Note: These images are provided strictly as hands-on educational lab container images for Azure AKS learning. They are lightweight NGINX-based web servers configured with visual indicators to help students, beginners, and cloud engineers master Kubernetes workload lifecycle management with confidence.
