It contains:\n\n- PHP CLI, newest stable release. The base image is the official `php:latest` (Debian).\n- [Composer](https://getcomposer.org/), newest release, from the official `composer:latest` image.\n- [PHPUnit](https://phpunit.de/), newest stable PHAR, as the `phpunit` command. The build\n checks the GPG signature of the PHAR with the PHPUnit release key.\n- [pcov](https://github.com/krakjoe/pcov) for fast line coverage in PHPUnit.\n- The extensions `bcmath`, `intl`, `pdo_mysql`, `pdo_pgsql`, and `zip`, and the built-in\n `mbstring`, `pdo_sqlite`, `curl`, `dom`, `openssl`, `sodium`, and `xml`.\n- `git` and `unzip`, which Composer uses to download packages.\n\nThe image uses `php.ini-development`, so PHP shows all errors and runs `assert()`. The memory\nlimit is off (`memory_limit = -1`), because the coverage of a large project uses much memory.\nComposer keeps its settings and its cache in `/tmp/composer` (`COMPOSER_HOME`), so it also\nworks for a user without a home directory. `COMPOSER_ALLOW_SUPERUSER=1` stops the warning\nwhen a CI job runs Composer as `root`. The working directory is `/workspace`. The default\ncommand starts Bash.\n\n## Tags\n\n| Tag | Meaning | Platform |\n| --- | --- | --- |\n| `latest` | Latest successful build from `main` with the newest stable tools. | `linux/amd64` |\n\n[View all tags on Docker Hub](https://hub.docker.com/r/stden/php/tags).\nThe `latest` tag changes when a new build passes its tests.\n\n## Pull the image\n\n```sh\ndocker pull stden/php:latest\ndocker run --rm stden/php:latest bash -c 'php --version && composer --version && phpunit --version'\n```\n\n## Tutorial\n\nRun the commands from the root of your project, where `composer.json` is. The commands\nmount the project directory at `/workspace`. `--user \"$(id -u):$(id -g)\"` runs the container\nas your user, so `vendor/`, `composer.lock`, and the coverage reports belong to you.\n\n### Step 1: Install the dependencies with Composer\n\n```sh\nmkdir -p \"$HOME/.cache/composer\"\ndocker run --rm --user \"$(id -u):$(id -g)\" -v \"$PWD\":/workspace \\\n -v \"$HOME/.cache/composer\":/tmp/composer/cache \\\n stden/php:latest composer install --no-interaction --prefer-dist\n```\n\nThe second volume keeps the Composer download cache between runs. Create the cache\ndirectory before the first run. If Docker creates it, it belongs to `root`.\n\n### Step 2: Run PHPUnit\n\n```sh\ndocker run --rm --user \"$(id -u):$(id -g)\" -v \"$PWD\":/workspace \\\n stden/php:latest vendor/bin/phpunit\n```\n\n`vendor/bin/phpunit` is the PHPUnit version that `composer.lock` sets. If `phpunit/phpunit`\nis not a dependency of the project, use the `phpunit` command of the image. To get a shell\nin the project, add `-it` and do not give a command. The default command is `bash`.\n\n### Step 3: Measure the code coverage with pcov\n\nPHPUnit must have a `` element in `phpunit.xml`. This element tells PHPUnit which\nfiles to report:\n\n```xml\n\n\n \n \n tests\n \n \n \n \n src\n \n \n\n```\n\n```sh\ndocker run --rm --user \"$(id -u):$(id -g)\" -v \"$PWD\":/workspace \\\n stden/php:latest vendor/bin/phpunit --coverage-text --coverage-html coverage\n```\n\nOpen `coverage/index.html` for the report. The `Runtime:` line of the PHPUnit output must\nshow `with PCOV`. pcov collects data only for files in the directory `pcov.directory`. By\ndefault, this is `src`, `lib`, or `app` in the current directory. If none of them exists, it\nis the current directory. If your code is in a different directory, set it:\n\n```sh\ndocker run --rm --user \"$(id -u):$(id -g)\" -v \"$PWD\":/workspace stden/php:latest \\\n php -d pcov.directory=/workspace/modules vendor/bin/phpunit --coverage-text\n```\n\n### Step 4: Test with a database\n\nIntegration tests must have a database server. Start PostgreSQL in a Docker network. Give\nthe connection settings to the tests in environment variables. The test code reads them,\nfor example `new PDO(getenv('DB_DSN'), getenv('DB_USER'), getenv('DB_PASSWORD'))`.\n\n```sh\ndocker network create php-tests\ndocker run -d --name php-tests-db --network php-tests \\\n -e POSTGRES_PASSWORD=test -e POSTGRES_DB=app_test postgres:latest\nuntil docker exec php-tests-db pg_isready -h localhost -U postgres; do sleep 1; done\n\ndocker run --rm --user \"$(id -u):$(id -g)\" --network php-tests -v \"$PWD\":/workspace \\\n -e DB_DSN=\"pgsql:host=php-tests-db;dbname=app_test\" -e DB_USER=postgres -e DB_PASSWORD=test \\\n stden/php:latest vendor/bin/phpunit\n\ndocker rm -f php-tests-db\ndocker network rm php-tests\n```\n\nFor MySQL, use `mysql:latest` with `MYSQL_ROOT_PASSWORD` and `MYSQL_DATABASE`, and the DSN\n`mysql:host=php-tests-db;dbname=app_test`. The password `test` is a placeholder for a\ndisposable test database.\n\n### Step 5: Add an extension in a child image\n\nThe image has the `docker-php-ext-install`, `docker-php-ext-enable`, and `pecl` tools of\nthe official PHP image. Add the extensions that are necessary for your project:\n\n```dockerfile\nFROM stden/php:latest\nRUN apt-get update \\\n && apt-get install -y --no-install-recommends libpng-dev \\\n && docker-php-ext-install gd \\\n && rm -rf /var/lib/apt/lists/*\n```\n\n## Use the image in CI\n\n### GitHub Actions\n\nThe job runs in the image. The PostgreSQL service has the host name `postgres`.\n\n```yaml\nname: PHP tests\non: [push, pull_request]\npermissions:\n contents: read\njobs:\n phpunit:\n runs-on: ubuntu-latest\n container: stden/php:latest\n services:\n postgres:\n image: postgres:latest\n env:\n POSTGRES_DB: app_test\n POSTGRES_PASSWORD: test\n options: >-\n --health-cmd pg_isready\n --health-interval 5s\n --health-timeout 5s\n --health-retries 10\n env:\n DB_DSN: pgsql:host=postgres;dbname=app_test\n DB_USER: postgres\n DB_PASSWORD: test\n steps:\n - uses: actions/checkout@v7\n - uses: actions/cache@v6\n with:\n path: /tmp/composer/cache\n key: composer-${{ hashFiles('composer.lock') }}\n restore-keys: composer-\n - run: composer validate --strict\n - run: composer install --no-interaction --prefer-dist --no-progress\n - run: vendor/bin/phpunit --coverage-text --coverage-clover coverage.xml\n```\n\n### GitLab CI\n\nThe job runs in the image. The MySQL service has the host name `mysql`. GitLab reads the\ncoverage percentage from the `Lines:` line and shows the test results in the merge request.\n\n```yaml\nphpunit:\n image: stden/php:latest\n services:\n - name: mysql:latest\n alias: mysql\n variables:\n MYSQL_DATABASE: app_test\n MYSQL_ROOT_PASSWORD: test\n DB_DSN: \"mysql:host=mysql;dbname=app_test\"\n DB_USER: root\n DB_PASSWORD: test\n COMPOSER_CACHE_DIR: \"$CI_PROJECT_DIR/.composer-cache\"\n cache:\n key:\n files: [composer.lock]\n paths: [.composer-cache/]\n script:\n - composer validate --strict\n - composer install --no-interaction --prefer-dist --no-progress\n - vendor/bin/phpunit --colors=never --coverage-text --log-junit junit.xml --coverage-cobertura coverage.xml\n coverage: '/^\\s*Lines:\\s*\\d+\\.\\d+%/'\n artifacts:\n when: always\n reports:\n junit: junit.xml\n coverage_report:\n coverage_format: cobertura\n path: coverage.xml\n```\n\nGitLab caches only files in the project directory. For this reason, `COMPOSER_CACHE_DIR`\npoints into the project.\n\n## Best practices\n\n- **Commit `composer.lock`.** Then CI installs the same package versions as your computer.\n Run `composer install` in CI. Run `composer update` only when you want new versions.\n- **Install without questions.** Use `composer install --no-interaction --prefer-dist`.\n `--prefer-dist` downloads release archives and does not clone git repositories. This is\n faster and uses less disk space. Add `--no-progress` to keep the CI log short.\n- **Cache the Composer cache, not `vendor/`.** Use `composer.lock` in the cache key. With a\n warm cache, `composer install` does not download the packages again.\n- **Use pcov for coverage, not Xdebug.** pcov collects only line coverage, and it is much\n faster. Use Xdebug only for branch coverage or a step debugger. Do not load pcov and\n Xdebug together.\n- **Use the PHPUnit version of the project.** Add `phpunit/phpunit` to `require-dev`. Run\n `vendor/bin/phpunit`. Then all developers and CI use the same version.\n- **Make PHPUnit strict.** Set `failOnWarning` and `failOnRisky` in `phpunit.xml`. Put the\n PHPUnit cache in `.phpunit.cache`. Add this directory to `.gitignore`.\n- **Check the dependencies.** Run `composer validate --strict` on each change. Run\n `composer audit` to find packages with known security problems. It must have network access.\n- **Use a disposable test database.** Start a new database service for each job. Do not\n connect tests to a shared or production database. Keep real passwords in the secret\n store of your CI system.\n- **Run as your user on your computer.** Use `--user \"$(id -u):$(id -g)\"`, so that the\n container does not create files that belong to `root` in your project.\n\n## Source and checks\n\nThe smoke test writes a small project with a PSR-4 autoloader and no external\ndependencies. It validates `composer.json`, generates the autoloader with Composer, runs\nPHPUnit with pcov, and checks the exact coverage numbers. If a test fails, PHPUnit must\nexit with status 1. The test also checks that each extension loads without a warning and\nworks. It runs without network access.\n\n- [Dockerfile](https://github.com/stden/docker-gems/blob/main/php/Dockerfile)\n- [Smoke test](https://github.com/stden/docker-gems/blob/main/php/smoke-test.sh)\n- [Overview source](https://github.com/stden/docker-gems/blob/main/php/README.md)\n- [Repository and Docker tutorial](https://github.com/stden/docker-gems)\n- [Composer documentation](https://getcomposer.org/doc/)\n- [PHPUnit documentation](https://docs.phpunit.de/)\n","has_starred","hub_user","immutable_tags_settings",{"_86":11,"_87":88},"enabled","rules",[89],".*","is_automated","permissions",{"_93":22,"_94":11,"_95":11},"read","write","admin","user","storage_size",226079063,"orgData","recentTags",[102],{"_103":56,"_104":105,"_106":107,"_108":109,"_110":111,"_112":113,"_62":129,"_130":105,"_131":34,"_132":68,"_44":133,"_134":135,"_136":120,"_137":129,"_138":77,"_139":22},"content_type","creator",1739666,"digest","sha256:1ec1293ca26ba19a6554908b1e9574a9319c36f7809843281e8efbe03c17bafe","full_size",226064311,"id",1363511463,"images",[114],{"_115":116,"_106":107,"_117":118,"_119":120,"_121":122,"_123":124,"_125":118,"_126":-5,"_127":109,"_74":77,"_128":-5},"architecture","amd64","features","","last_pulled","2026-10-23T21:01:58.308222288Z","last_pushed","2026-10-23T17:44:52.430673974Z","os","linux","os_features","os_version","size","variant","2026-10-23T17:44:52.792546Z","last_updater","last_updater_username","media_type","latest","repository",33019419,"tag_last_pulled","tag_last_pushed","tag_status","v2","sbxKitMetadata","isPotentialSpam","isHubSbxKitsEnabled","showSbxRunInCloud","showSbxLogoOverride","sbxTrademarkText","displaySecurityMetadata","tagAttestations","tagsHaveAttestations",[],"selectedTag","attestationsUrl","routes/_layout.r.$namespace.$reponame.tags",{"_39":154,"_164":165,"_148":174,"_175":11},{"_41":155,"_54":159,"_57":58,"_59":60,"_61":11,"_62":63,"_64":65,"_66":160,"_44":36,"_33":34,"_69":70,"_71":56,"_72":73,"_74":75,"_76":77,"_78":-5,"_79":73,"_80":81,"_82":11,"_83":34,"_84":161,"_90":11,"_91":163,"_96":34,"_97":98},[156,157,158],{"_44":45,"_46":47},{"_44":49,"_46":50},{"_44":52,"_46":53},[56],[68],{"_86":11,"_87":162},[89],{"_93":22,"_94":11,"_95":11},"tags",{"_166":75,"_167":-5,"_168":-5,"_169":170},"count","next","previous","results",[171],{"_103":56,"_104":105,"_106":107,"_108":109,"_110":111,"_112":172,"_62":129,"_130":105,"_131":34,"_132":68,"_44":133,"_134":135,"_136":120,"_137":129,"_138":77,"_139":22},[173],{"_115":116,"_106":107,"_117":118,"_119":120,"_121":122,"_123":124,"_125":118,"_126":-5,"_127":109,"_74":77,"_128":-5},[],"canDeleteTags","actionData","errors"]
