⁠PHP-FPM Alpine Images

A family of multi-platform PHP-FPM images for PHP 7.4, 8.3, 8.4, and 8.5, designed to provide a consistent runtime and extension set across supported PHP versions.

⁠Common Features

• PHP-FPM on Alpine Linux, suitable for containerized web applications behind a web server or reverse proxy.
• Composer for dependency management, installed from the official Composer installer and verified before installation.
• Git and Vim retained as available tools inside the image.
• Common PHP extensions:
  • bz2, curl, exif, gd, gettext, gmp, imap, intl
  • mbstring, opcache, mysqli, PDO, pdo_mysql
  • pdo_pgsql, pdo_sqlite, soap, xml, xsl, zip
• PECL extensions:
  • MongoDB
  • Redis
  • SSH2
  • Imagick
  • Swoole
• Image and data support through GD, ImageMagick, PostgreSQL, SQLite, and the relevant Alpine runtime libraries.
• Lean build output: compilation tools and development packages are removed after the extensions are built, while required runtime libraries remain.
• Multi-platform builds for linux/amd64 and linux/arm64.
• Optional Xdebug support for development or debugging builds; it should be disabled in production images.

⁠Configuration

The image family is intended to support a shared PHP production baseline, including OPcache settings, bounded request limits, and PHP-FPM pool controls. Pool sizing should be adjusted to the memory limit and measured worker usage of each deployment.

⁠Version Compatibility

The goal is to keep the same application-facing extensions and functionality across PHP versions. Some extensions may need version-specific installation steps as PHP changes; for example, IMAP is provided differently in PHP 8.4 and must be handled as a PECL extension there.

⁠Current Alignment Work

The existing PHP 8.3 and 8.4 Alpine Dockerfiles provide the closest basis for the common feature set. The PHP 7.4 Alpine Dockerfile currently differs in its extension list and build process, and a PHP 8.5 Dockerfile has not yet been added. These versions need to be aligned and verified individually before the family can be described as fully consistent.
