uodcvip/matlab repository overview

MATLAB docker images built for on-premises GPU servers that use JupyterHub w/ dockerspawner. These images are built from the images in the NVIDIA NGC container registry, with some minor modifications like the installation of the matlab jupyterhub kernel. Build repo is located over at GitHub.

Current allowed Jupyter package versions have to match these rules (required for our JupyterHub instance to avoid issues).

jupyterhub>=1.1.0<=1.2.0
jupyterlab>=1.2.1<=1.3.0

Also includes the jupyter-nvdashboard extension in the container image (among others).

To run this image on a GPU via a JupyterHub server you'll need the nvidia-container-runtime installed and must have the following in your jupyterhub_config.py

c.Spawner.extra_host_config = {
    'runtime': 'nvidia',
    'shm_size': '16G', # default is **much** too small
}

You'll also need to mount the following directories (these are going to be removed in a future release)

c.Spawner.volumes = {
    'tensorboard': '/shares/local/tensorboard',
    'cvip': '/shares/local/cvip',
    '/mnt/share': '/shares/share',
    '/mnt/studentshare': '/shares/studentshare',
}

MATLAB Licenses

IMPORTANT You must install a valid MATLAB license if you are not part of the University of Dundee. You will not be able to access our network license file, and the matlab command will raise the error below

root@172aa961b472:~# matlab
MATLAB is selecting SOFTWARE OPENGL rendering.
License checkout failed.
License Manager Error -15
Unable to connect to the license server.
Check that the network license manager has been started, and that the client machine can communicate
with the license server.
# ...
# additional diagnostic output

You can mount a license file like this

docker run -it --gpus all -v /path/to/your/license.data:/opt/matlab/R2020b/licenses/license.dat:ro uodcvip/matlab:r2020b matlab

Or you own can set your own network license file as an environment variable:

docker run --gpus all -it -e MLM_LICENSE_FILE=<your-connection-details> uodcvip/matlab:r2020b matlab
