vincentmuriithi/karirs repository overview

kariRS Embedded Framework Image

This Docker repository provides a ready-to-use environment for kariRS, a Rust-based embedded framework for microcontroller development. It includes all necessary tools, dependencies, and Rust components preinstalled, allowing developers to build, test, and flash firmware quickly and reliably.

With kariRS v1.1.0 and above, this image now supports both AVR and ESP32-based microcontrollers, enabling development across multiple embedded architectures using a unified workflow.

Features:
  • Preconfigured Rust nightly toolchain with cargo and rust-src

  • AVR toolchain support: gcc-avr, avr-libc, avrdude

  • ESP32 toolchain support. Supported ESP32 boards include:

    • ESP32-S2
    • ESP32-S3
    • ESP32-C3
    • ESP32-C6
  • Common embedded development utilities installed (git, make, pkg-config)

  • Ready-to-run kariRS CLI for project management, building, flashing, and monitoring

  • Simplifies MCU firmware development and ensures a consistent build environment

Quick start (interactive container)

Start an interactive kariRS environment:

docker run -dit --name kariRS vincentmuriithi/karirs:latest bash

Enter the container:

docker exec -it kariRS bash

You can now use kari commands inside the container.

Mount a host directory so your projects persist outside the container.

Linux / WSL example
docker run -dit \
  --name kariRS \
  -v "$(pwd):/workspace" \
  vincentmuriithi/karirs:latest bash

Navigate inside the container:

cd /workspace
kari new blink
cd ./blink
kari build
Accessing hardware devices (Linux / WSL)

To flash real hardware, pass the serial device into the container:

docker run -dit \
  --name kariRS \
  --device=/dev/ttyACM0 \
  -v "$(pwd):/workspace" \
  vincentmuriithi/karirs:1.1.0 bash

On Windows + WSL, USB devices may require usbipd to attach the device to WSL before Docker can access it.

Why use this image?
  • No local Rust or embedded toolchain setup required
  • Consistent builds across machines and CI
  • Ideal for experimenting, learning, and professional embedded development
Documentation & Source

Full documentation, command reference and examples for kariRS are available at:

This image is ideal for developers who want to start embedded Rust development immediately without manually configuring the toolchain and dependencies. It ensures reproducible builds and is compatible with Linux-based CI/CD pipelines and local development setups.
