virolamessenger/virola-server repository overview

Virola Server is an integral part of Virola Messenger.

Virola Server can be hosted on your own physical or virtual server. If needed, it can operate entirely within an intranet, without Internet access.

What is Virola Messenger

Virola Messenger is a self-hosted tool for corporate and personal communication and collaboration.

It offers essential features such as:

  • Text messaging with replies, discussions, mentions, and reactions
  • File sharing
  • Continuous voice and video meetings
  • Screen sharing and remote control
  • Task tracking with a Kanban board

All Virola features are developed in-house, with no reliance on third-party tools or services.

With its ability to import users from a Directory Server or JSON and its flexible permission system, Virola is a strong choice for corporate use.

With its self-registration feature, Virola is also well-suited for community use.

With easy setup and free usage for teams of up to 10 users, Virola an excellent choice for families and small businesses.

Virola Client apps are available for all major desktop and mobile operating systems

Starting Virola Server

To start the Virola Server after pulling its container, execute the following command:

docker run -it --rm -p 8888:7777/tcp -p 8888:7777/udp -v $HOME/virola-storage:/virola virolamessenger/virola-server:latest

Where:

  • 8888 — the port on which your server will listen for external connections and which the Virola Client will use to connect. This can be any valid port number (from 1 to 65535), but it must be the same for both TCP and UDP protocols.
  • 7777 — the internal port inside the Docker container. This must be set to 7777 and cannot be changed.

Administering Virola Server

All administration tasks are performed via the Virola Client app:

  1. Download the Virola Client for your operating system from the Virola website, install it, and run the application.
  2. Log in to the Virola Client using the following credentials:
  • Server Host: IP address of the server where the Docker container is running
