webstop/cordova-ruby repository overview

This docker image contains everything you need to have a working development environment for cordova. The container's working dir is /myapp so that you can setup a volume mapping your project dir to /myapp in the container.

This environment supports everything except builds. So, with this environment, you can create a new cordova project, manage platforms and plugins, and 'prepare' the platforms so that you can then use Xcode and/or Android Studio installed natively on your machine to directly build and deploy the iOS and android projects generated by cordova.

Using native Xcode and Android Studio IDEs grants much better interaction with devices for debugging and deployment to appstore and Goggle Play store.

Note that bower is also included since our mobile projects use bower to install some of the front-end components.

cordova 9.0.0 + ruby 2.3.3p222 + git 2.11.0 + node v12.18.3 + npm 6.14.6 + bower 1.8.8

How to use

No download or installation required! You can launch a bash prompt into this container with the following command:

docker run -it --rm -v "$(pwd):/myapp" webstop/cordova-ruby bash

root@26871064a3d3:/myapp# cordova -v
9.0.0 ([email protected])

root@26871064a3d3:/myapp# ruby -v
ruby 2.3.3p222 (2016-11-21) [x86_64-linux-gnu]

root@26871064a3d3:/myapp# git --version
git version 2.11.0

root@26871064a3d3:/myapp#

It may be a good idea to add a file named bash to your project directory so that you can more easily launch the bash shell in the container. Create the bash file and add the following contents:

#!/usr/bin/env bash

docker run -it --rm -v "$(pwd):/myapp" webstop/cordova-ruby bash

How to make and deploy changes to this image

  1. Be sure to pull the latest commits from github before making any changes:

    https://github.com/Webstop/cordova-ruby

  2. Test locally first

    1. Build locally using:

      $ docker build --no-cache -t webstop/cordova-ruby:1.7.0 -t webstop/cordova-ruby:latest .

      Be sure to change the version tag at the end to reflect the changes that you have made.

    2. Test locally:

      $ docker run -it --rm -v "$(pwd):/myapp" webstop/cordova-ruby bash
      ...
      # cordova -v
      ...

      While in the container, check the versions of the various tools (cordova, npm, etc.) and update this README.md file with the installed version numbers.

      You might even switch to the application dir of a cordova project first and try out a few cordova commands in the container.

  3. Update README.md

    Be sure to update the list of image versions in this README.md and make any additional changes to reflect the changes made to the Dockerfile.

  4. Deploy

    1. Commit the changes to the Dockerfile/README to git
    2. Push master to origin https://github.com/Webstop/cordova-ruby
    3. Create a branch for the current commit that matches the new version tag of the image (eg: 1.7.0)
    4. Push the new branch to origin
  5. Verify hub.docker.com page

    https://hub.docker.com/repository/docker/webstop/cordova-ruby

    Check the 'Recent builds' section of the page to verify that the pushed master and version branches were automagically picked up and that they were successfully built by the automated image build process on docker hub.
