Inside the container, you can run:
idf.py --version
idf.py build
Create this file in your project: .devcontainer/devcontainer.json
Example:
{
"name": "ESP-IDF v5.5.3 (slim)",
"dockerComposeFile": ["../docker-compose.yml"],
"service": "esp-dev",
"workspaceFolder": "/workspace",
"postCreateCommand": "bash -lc 'idf.py --version && python3 --version'",
"shutdownAction": "stopCompose",
"customizations": {
"vscode": {
"extensions": [
"ms-vscode.cpptools",
"ms-vscode.cmake-tools",
"ms-python.python",
"ms-vscode.makefile-tools"

docker-compose.yml be placed?docker-compose.yml is in the project root.devcontainer.json is under .devcontainer/, use ../docker-compose.yml.Current default in docker-compose.yml:
- ./:/workspace
Meaning: the directory where docker-compose.yml is located (usually project root) is mounted to /workspace in container.
If you want to mount a different project directory:
- /absolute/path/to/your_project:/workspace
/dev mapping required?- /dev:/dev.If you want to build and test the Docker locally:
docker build -t esp-idf-slim:local .
docker run --rm -it -v /absolute/path/to/your_project:/workspace esp-idf-slim:local bash
